Tyrian 2000

Tyrian 2000 looks good, controls well and gives the player plenty to go for and shoot at. But that's also it's problem - too much too plenty. You're going to be bypassing a lot of enemies because it takes too long to even destroy one. There are just shoot 'em up games before and after Tyrian that have done the genre better. Games like Raiden, R-Type, Gradius, Ikaruga and hell even Galaga have done a lot better than what Tyrian has accomplished. I guess it's because those games while they do demand your attention, they have enemies that can go down with one shot and that's just the staple. Tyrian 2000 tried to be something else and I commend it for that, but it's not that great of a shooter. Too slow, too plentiful and too boring.

Tyrian is like a mostly empty lounge on a cruise liner hosting low and subtle piano music and an on-board electronic female voice that sounds like she's about to cry. Shooting is mostly optional.

Not my cup of tea.

Whether the game is great or not, the lack of a keyboard control interface drops this rating to a 2. Then again, it was free for a reason LOL
