Very enjoyable

Just finished Tron 2.0 and enjoyed it so much was poking around on the reviews to see what others thought. In my personal games list I wrote: "Very enjoyable first person shooter with some RPG elements for leveling character and weapons. Great sound and visual style. Linear game play but some replay-ability for those who wish to track down every last "build point" - might make sense when you play the game)." A previous reviewer recorded a number of issues they had with the game and I was sorry to read that. I had a different experience (everyone will!) and wanted to include my take as a recent player. The quick save option (good old games - new game auto saves suck! haha) was my saviour as I loved trying different things or jumping into different sketchy places and then quickly reloading and moving on. I found the different weapon types were interesting and I used them all in different circumstances. I actually liked how the same Energy was used to power everything and I had to manage that during my battles. I would usually start battles with some early power hits with weapons that used Energy and then go back to using Disc. The Tron Disk also became my go-to weapon and I often had to use the right mouse button to call it back when it went off course. That even became a strategy to call it back for repeated hits on bosses. Other apps for Stealth, Shield or Melee I would equip rarely but could be fun at times. Boss fights rarely required healing or energy for me (though some times I timed a dash during Boss weapon cool down). I searched out a sheltered "sniping" spot and kept launching Disc until it was over! For Corruption infection, I would remove infected apps then do "anti-virus". I found most Boss fights had a gimmick required that would defeat them more quickly but generally just blasting them until it was over did the trick. Overall I found the game holds up very well in visual, sound and game play and I enjoyed every minute of my experience.

About time I played this

No idea why I didn't try this sooner! The game is quite good and has aged very gracefully, too! Force anisotropic filtering via your video driver settings and grab the "Killer App" Mod from the web so you can get the game to run in nice 1080p and it is all good to go. Took a bit to get used to the gameplay, and some areas of the game definitely qualify as too difficult... BUT that is why cheats exist. ;) I like the story, it is engaging and for such an old game, it has a surprising amount of cutscenes and varied locations. There were a few bugs, I had a corrupted savegame once, and on several occasions the game hiccuped while loading the next level and had to be killed, but overall, considering it wasn't made for Win10, it runs quite well.

A fun game, if somewhat limited

I've attempted to get into this game several times in the years since I originally purchased it. Finally, I made a deliberate attempt to finish it over a winter break. I installed the Killer App Mod (highly recommended, by the way). It's fairly different to the sort of game that I usually play, but I enjoy the world of Tron, and was excited to experience more of it. Overall, I recommend playing the game, but I also realize that much of the game is an acquired taste due to it's slower nature. This game is fun experience once you can get into it, but occasionally janky platforming sections will have you dying and repeating certain sections over and over (for example, during a brief visit to Alan's old computer, you must cross a chasm on platforms that will be randomly shot out from under you by tanks. The pattern is seemingly random, and will likely kill you at least a few times. The RPG elements introduced are unique, but not in such a way that each playthrough will be dramatically different. Aesthetically, this game is amazing. The soundtrack is excellent at establishing the alien and electronic world of Tron. The graphics capture a very 2003 vision of the computer world, which is fun if you grew up in that time. This also means it is dramatically different than the colder, darker style of Tron: Legacy or Tron: Uprising. The story is unremarkable, but largely secondary to the gameplay, which is fine. Disc combat is fun, and while the game boasts a variety of other weapons, you will likely not even touch most of them. In my playthrough, I only really used the disc, the LOL (a sniper rifle), and the Sequencer (which lets you throw multiple discs without having to wait for the first disc to rebound to you again). Even then, both of those were used in very specific circumstances. Otherwise, the normal disc weapon was fine for the whole game. In conclusion, this game is fun. Enjoy an experience unlike anything else.

Excellent game

just played this agin, having played it many years ago thanks to great game design, good playability and some really unique features it still feels great to play the fact that it's set inside a computer system means they can get away with stylised electronic graphics - the face animations still hold up and once you get the hang of how the whole thing works it's great fun. each level has a fairly unique design and as you progress the scenery gets more and more impressive i got to the end wishing there was more which was saying something - very much recommended

Great game, great value & experience.

The TL;DR line: if you even remotely like sci-fi, the Tron movies or a good, lightearted FPS, get this game. I can't be more pleased with TRON 2.0. But let's first review the cons: - The game is somewhat short. - The levels are repetitive. You always have to unlock the gizmo XYZ to help program A achieve result B. But it's fun even with that. - The light cycle sections don't go with all people. I loved them but YMMV. - Sometimes after loading a saved game, the game becomes unresponsive and one has to sign out in order to regain control of your computer. - Installation of unofficial patch v1.042 is a must, and you must do it since GOG cannot carry it due to reasons. Now, having said that, this is a fantastic game. As some other reviewer said, this is a love letter to the original TRON movie. It really feels immersive; you feel like you are playing the movie again. The graphics have aged very well and the game looks great. Since the game is old, it's light on resources and can be player by almost every computer. The voice acting is stellar, and you have names such as Bruce Boxleitner, Cindy Morgan and Rebecca Romjin-Stamos. Gameplay is light FPS, with some RPG elements: you improve yourself with new versions and subroutines, and you could choose to improve your abilities as you see fit within certain parameters. This is somewhat similar to Deus Ex but resembles more No One Lives Forever (from the same folks). There are levels which have to be played with light cycles. There are new designs contributed by the very own Sid Mead (yay!), and I found the levels enjoyable, and a nice break from the FPS mechanics. These sections are well done and it really feels like you're playing a light cycle game from the movie. I understand these sections can be skipped for those less inclined to play them. But if you do, there is even a menu section where you can instaplay a quick race. All in all, great game and great value. Go get it!
