Curse the quick thinking of the Arch Authority, snatching the child away before his doom was sealed. Had the lad been with the rest, surely my suffering would have ceased years ago. At last I have found him, but in a world of isolation and innocence. He has no idea of the twists and turns his life has taken thus far, nor the path I have planned for his very short future. Just let him try to discover the truth, and learn the secrets of Strata's five nested worlds. Watching his struggle will be an amusement. Facing him will be horribly wonderful.
Torin's Passage is a game for children, but like all really good games, books, and movies with similar target audience it also has that knowing wink towards older audience, and the best thing about this game is that it “winks” a lot. This is clearly one the the best adventure games from Sierra, made by a fantastic team that included talents such as Al Lowe and Michel Legrand. So if you are an adventure games fan this is a no-brainer. If not so much, then try it anyway because everyone can use a good laugh and this game is filled with hilarity.
Funny and fascinating story from the mind of Al Lowe (creator of Leisure Suit Larry), full of comical, twists, and surprises.
Challenging puzzles that will put your brain-muscle to hard work; but program on-line hints ensure no one gets "stuck."
Beautiful cartoony graphics and outstanding music--composed by three-time Academy Award-winning composer Michel Legrand.
Created by Al Love ( yes, one of LSL fame ) Torin's Passage is good example of old style point&click adventure games, just like a lot of other Sierra clasics.
How much you will enjoy this game depends mostly of how tolerant you are to some design quirks of old p&c, like not always logical puzzles, no highlighting of interactive areas, ocasional pixel hunts, and backgrounds of charming but far from exactly high quality graphics ( ok, game is from 1995, set your expecations low ). Tho one bit of novelty is, unlike almost all of oldschool P&C, death is just slap on the wrist and loads you right back before "bad" decision. There is even easter egg related to that.
Storywise, it's not bad, just there is not that much of it. Protagonist gets tricked into chase after sorcer Lycenita, does exaytly that for 99% of the game, and gets a bit of resolution at the very end. Tho understandable in contex of this was first of FIVE planed games.
And yes, I got a special message from Al Love at the end. Didn't you?
I Searched All Over 4 This Game, GOG Had It All Set Up, No Coding Required In Order To Play It, GOG Does All The DOS Work For You. It Was Worth The Buy Just For The Convience To Play Without Having To Worry About DOSBox Coding.
Torin's Passage has lived rent free in my head for decades, now. I'm delighted to be able to play it again and am surprised by just how much and accurately I remembered it. Some parts have definitely aged less well than others. A lot of the jokes and references leave me scratching my head. The puzzles are either overly simplistic or aggravatingly unintuitive with little to no in-between. But the nostalgia factor does a lot to compensate for this game's flaws. :) The only way I realized I could pan across an entire scene or navigate to certain impossible-looking areas was through the hint system... Whatever! I'm having fun, and that's sort of all that matters.
