Great, great fun

I played Diablo II when it first came out and spent so many hours playing and loving that game. So when I recently read a review saying that Torchlight II was a similarly fun action RPG, I bought Torchlight II - and I am loving it. The game has just the right combination of combat, customising weapons, and levelling up for me. It took very little instruction to understand the basic mechanics of the game, which meant that I was fully immersed in the game play within mere minutes. One of my favourite things about this game is the pet that you have accompanying your character. It's great fun having a warrior panda, dog, hawk or other animal fighting alongside of you. You can also pick up enhancements for your pet to upgrade its fighting capabilities. Plus you can load up your pet with items you've picked up and want to sell - you can then send your pet back to base to sell and buy a variety of potions, too. I really am loving this game.

They don't make them like this anymore.

If you are any kind of dungeon crawler fan, you need to get your hand on this title. It is easily the best “Diablo-esque” game when it came out and still stands well today. At $20, it’s a no-brainer. When you consider the game comes with it’s amazing (if traditional) soundtrack as part of the download, it’s a damn steal! I recommend playing Torchlight first, but considering how little story there is in either title really, this is not required for anything.

One of my favourite ARPGs

The game is quite easy to pick up and play, there's excellent build variety, the graphics are pretty timeless, the gameplay loop is mostly quite fun. Probably the only real gripe I have with it is that it can get pretty repetitive at points, but luckily you can just take a break and pick up from where you left off later without feeling lost. I really hope that Runic gets another chance at making a new Torchlight game instead of the various other studios that were stepped in to make the two games we got since this. It's well worth the price (especially right now while it's on sale). You can also try out the first game which is a slightly less polished version of this without the multiplayer.

Classic aRPG, true gem

Torchlight II is an action RPG in a fantasy setting. Choose a class (Mage, ranged, DPS or tank) and level it by accepting quests, clearing the map and running dungeons. The game never ends: after finishing it you get new game plus modes, with higher level enemies, and a vendor that sells maps to random dungeons. The loot is endlessly varied, coming in various rarities and has randomized stats. There are vendors, enchanters, alchemists, gem savers, and even a gambling shop. To manage all this loot, besides the inventories of your own and your pet, you have access to a personal and a shared stash, so you can even transfer items between your different characters. While the genre has quite a few legends (The Diablo series and Grim Dawn foremost) this game is the one I have played the most. I love it because the visuals are colorful, the music is enchanting, the atmosphere is game-y rather than grim and serious, and the tone is light and funny. The gameplay is absolutely addictive (gotta collect all the sets and the best unique items), the fights keep me on my toes (try the higher difficulties or even hardcore mode), the builds are very diverse and finding out which ones are good enough for elite difficulty is as challenging as you'd expect from a game in this genre. I bought the game twice, once on Steam and once on Gog, because I really think this game is a classic. Honestly, I don't understand why the developers went bankrupt, given that they made a true gem like this one. If you like aRPG's I think you should really give this a try.

Torchlight 2 for Linux

Linux users have truly been blessed by Runic. Torchlight II is not only a very fun action RPG, but also has modest system requirements and runs on Linux and Mac. The single player campaign is fun, but the story is disposable. The multiplayer is a blast, but doesn't get much traffic. The upgrades, loot, and unlockables are pure gold. Toss in the NG+ mode and mods like the Synergies and Torchlight II's replay value becomes exponential. Some pine for a sequel, but I'm good right where I'm at.
