The best news is that we can finally play the original version of Tomb Raider 1/2/3 on modern system without having to patch it or use dos emulation.
The even better news could have been that we can play these games with modern graphics and 60fps... however that's when the issue start:
The modernize art-style is fantastic, however it makes the game much harder because now everything, from key items to platforms and pathsways, blend in so well with the rest of the environment to the point of being lmost impossible to spot.
Modern controls are questionable as well, since they built a new control scheme and camera for Lara without changing anything about the grid system of the old games.
Definitely worth the money, but expect learning curve as you go no matter what mode you chose.
I'm surprised this remaster exists at all to be frank, but the people involved clearly loved the original games. Despite its shortcomings they are continuing to update the game and add features. This is also the only way (as far as I know) to legally play any of the expansions, which have some of the best levels in their games, and overall I'm very greatful to the team and their effort to keep these games alive. :)
Looking at it purely as a remaster, I'm very impressed. As these are the original games underneath, I wasn't expecting much more than a texture upgrade. In fact, they have reworked the lighting, adding light sources as necessary to make the lighting logical. They've added a lot of 3D geometry for detail, e.g. vines and branches of trees and lamps to provide light. They also added some effects, such as subtle reflections on glass etc, some light fog. The cutscenes have animated faces now.
The interpretation of the levels is excellent. The new lighting and added details make the levels look quite different in places, but they look how I imagine Core would've made them if they could've. There's some nice fixes, e.g. it has all the music intact despite being the PC version, the footstep sounds on the Maria Doria have been fixed, TR2's broken waterfall sounds have been fixed. TR1 has skyboxes, the braid, and the midair flips. It feels like they really 'got' the games, and did everything they could to express Core's original vision.
I haven't seen everything in all three games yet of course, and I have no doubt there are imperfections in there, e.g. Floating Islands skybox. On the whole though, this basically fulfils my childhood dream of playing these games with the graphics from the FMVs. Please, for the love of god, do Last Revelation and Chronicles.
Some other reviews have expressed some concerns:
The EULA - I skimmed over it very fast and it did look bad, but these are worth the paper they're written on.
Crystal's warning message - They didn't make the games, they didn't even make the remasters, and they'd be nothing without the franchise they appropriated from Core. And their contribution? To directly and explicitly call Core racists. They mad no-one likes nulara. Fine by me.
"Modern" controls - work as well as you would expect (barely at all). As always for 28 years, ignore anyone criticising the controls, they should stick to Mario 64.
Buy at full price.
As the Title says, the new Visuals are really great, being inspired by the Model of the Cutscenes.
The new Textures and added 3D Models for Plants, Objects and Details on Walls are implemented very well.
Gameplaywise you can chose between the original and a more modern Control Scheme, i personally like the original Control Scheme,
when learned, they give you a very good and rewarding Control over Lara.
It just feels good shooting around in a very acrobatic Way or mastering the Level in such Way.
As i recently played through the original TR1 and 2, i started here with the golden Mask and that alone took me around 7 Hours.
Guessing from the percentage on the Archivment, i am one of the first to do so^^
The Framerate from the original Games feels sometimes a bit too stuttery, as i have very fresh Memory of the Games and also tested in on original Win98 Hardware, i don't think that my Brain is tricking me here while changing from the new to the old Graphics and its lower FPS.
There seem also to be some other minor Issues, the "Crystal Key" on a Level in the Golden Mask in the Water wasn't visible with the new Graphics, TR2 has no Background in the Item Menu and there is no nice Way to make Screenshots at the Moment.
But nothing Gamebreaking and you get a lot of Content with very nicely done Visuals for your Money.
Netherless, for playing solely the originals, i would suggest Openlara or the 16:9 Patches for the other Games, as they seem to run better (at the Moment).
A little Tip: Add -nolegal as starting Condition.
It not only takes away the annoying and nonsenical Warnings, but also the Logos, you'll be instantly in the Game Menu to start your Journey!
So i want to start by saying that i did not play those games before even though i did bought them on gog a while ago but when i heard remasters where comming i then waited.
But well now i did finished TR1 and TR2 as well as putting a good amount of time into Unfinished Buisness, The Golden mask and The Last Artifact expansions and also TR3.
I really enjoyed my time with those games so much so that it was almost the only games i was playing for a week straight :)
But i have some criticism of course...
Well first of all, yes the controls are really something to get used to and i did though
(I play on keyboard btw because it just feels more natural to me and i just can't do without the hotkeys especially f5 to save and f9 to load since you have to do it a ton in those games since there is literally no autosaves since it wasn't a thing at all at that time from my understanding but yeah)
I play on tank controls because the new modern controls are really weird and also those games where literally designed around the tank controls with the grid system with the blocks and all so it is the way to go.
But they could definitely do a better job with the modern controls none the less imo.
Although something i hope they fix is the camera which you can't move in tank controls when you play on mnk but you can with a controller.
Also there was mods on the originals to get mouse camera movements and on modern controls it works.
It is especially annoying because the default camera which is the same as the original is kinda terrible and i know almost if not all third person games in the 90's had awful cameras but still, couple that with human ennemies in TR2 especially (or the atlanteans mutans in TR1) that have way to much health and corner you a lot and it gets really annoying really fast.
There are some graphical glitches here and there but nothing major.
Also literally no graphics settings whatsoever on pc, what are we doing here.
But yeah overall awesome remasters !
