Retour gagnant

Nostalgic, but lacking narrative
Loads of nostalgia - I'll echo the statement that it feels like finding a forgotten LucasArts adventure game. Took me about 12 hours to complete. However the game's narrative hinges on a decidedly meta note. Instead of concluding the mystery set forth in the beginning of the game, the writing pivots into something else that comes up along the way. I was expecting something more direct and classic, like Monkey Island's first two games. Gameplay was what you'd expect - well thought out. Some of the puzzles were exceptionally obtuse and I resorted to forum hints for several of them, despite being a seasoned adventure gamer; to be fair, I like a couple of puzzles that are out-of-scope difficult, though. Keeps things fresh. There were an exceptional number of throwaway items (figuratively, and literally in the sense you can throw some of them in the trash cans). This made it difficult for me to decide how to manage my inventory, because I tend to horde things in adventure games - but, in my experience, you couldn't permanently lose anything you really needed. Unfortunately, as a narrative-driven game, the pivot and ultimate meta ending left it feeling lacking.

Amazing!
I have finished Thimbleweed Park twice now, once in casual mode, once in normal mode, and it´s simply amazing! I am 38 years now, grew up with Zak MacKracken, Indy 3&4, Monkey Island 1&2 and Thimbleweed Park really harks back to those good old days. The whole presentation already transports you back to those times, but the best is that the athmosphere, the witty lines, the whacky characters, the hilarious jokes all feel so authentic and great that it´s simply a pleasure to play. Seriously, I had so much fun just being in the world, exploring everything, talking to the people. Then when you get into the puzzling and finally find out the solution to a tricky puzzle it feels so awesome! :) I wouldn´t have thought it possible to recreate the glory of those old Lucasfilm games, but Terrible Toybox really pulled it off. I´ve never written a review on GOG before, but I felt the strong need to give back to the developers for creating such a gem. Highly recommended!!!

Even better than I expected
I'd give this game 4.75 out of 5 stars. Why the - .25? Because a couple of the NPCs got on my nerves a bit which is purely personal taste - they might not bother you at all - or you might even love them. And a couple of the jokes went on longer than I felt was necessary - again personal taste. Other than that. It was everything I hoped for and more. Loved the setting (with extra points for Delores' room) the story line, the puzzles, the interface, the navigation, and the freedom to try whatever I wanted whenever I wanted without worrying about being unceremoniously killed. Highly recommended.
