Don't get discouraged by this one

Everyone is giving this 5 stars? Jeez, you guys have more patience for dealing with zombies than I do. Been a very long time since I played this, but I vividly remember the greatest, most heart pounding and atmospheric game of all time suddenly turning into blundering around in really dark caves try to hack zombies to death. It was so much of a buzzkill I never got around to finishing the game. I would urge people to buy the sequel instead, which has only a few mildly infuriating (but quite fun to break) steampunk robots, but I suppose it's worthwhile doing this one first for the sake of plot if nothing else. Just don't let yourself get bogged down on the lamer levels... find some maps online if you have to. Thief 2 is essentially the same game but with better levels, including a truly amazing one that takes place entirely on rooftops and periodically through the windows of upper floors. Leave Thief 3 for last; it was hobbled by forced Xbox compatibility.

Wanna own a piece of history? Then get Thief 1 and 2, and play them in order. They may look outdated in terms of graphics, but Thief 1 and 2 revolutionized many aspects of gameplay. For starters, they introduced stereo surround sound specifically made to help you pinpoint where enemies are without seeing them. Even without surround sound, though, you will still feel the hair on your neck stand up when you're trying to avoid detection and the zombies and hammer haunts are rattling up behind your or just around the corner...especially if the haunts are searching the are where you carelessly made a noise. The interactivity in this game was on a high level for the time. Master thief Garett could do a lot of things--even swim and dive--whereas many contemporary game heroes were stuck on linear tracks that at most merely tested a player's memory and reflexes. Movement was made to be incredibly smooth, and this combined with the first-person perspective really ramps up the immersion factor--better than many games made to date. He also had plenty of different kinds of tools to help him in his infiltration of spaces, but their supplies are limited, and he has to steal to be able to afford more. Using them sparingly, and knowing when and when not to use them (especially water arrows) is a sign of a veteran Thief player. I'm not going to tell you about the enemies--they're going to have to be a surprise. While Garrett can fight most of them, he's better off sneaking around enemies or knocking them out. Beware, though--some can't be knocked out, and others can't be killed. Garrett isn't tough enough for protracted battles, especially when their friends show up to help kill him. They don't take turns fighting, either. Once you've experienced the end of both, do a web search for Through The Looking Glass (TTLG), and play some custom fan missions. You won't be disappointed! Nothing else needs to be said, except, "Join us...join us...JOIN US NOW!!!"

Most atmospheric game ever made

Where to start with Thief? The setting? The sound? The atmosphere? The stealth mechanics? It's a masterpiece through and through.

Thief Gold Review

Thief: The Dark Project is a first person Stealth game developed by Looking Glass Studios and published by Eidos in 1998. Thief Gold improves on the original, adding new levels, enemies and several other features. In the sprawling City you play the role of Garrett, master thief and former novice of the secretive Keepers. Through an excellently written story you encounter the orthodox order of the Hammerites and the chaotic Pagans, becoming an unwitting pawn of forces unknown and almost bringing the City to ruin. Using an arsenal of tools which include exotic ones such as water or fire arrows, you must stick to the shadows and accomplish your objectives through fifteen complex levels. Harder difficulty levels add new objectives and enemies and provide fewer resources. Patience is essential and mastering the game's sound and lighting systems is a must. Loot is the main resource of the game, represented by objects of value you must steal in order to procure tools for each mission. Boasting an impressive sound design and an atmospheric soundtrack by Eric Brosius, along with horror elements, Thief makes you forget that you are sitting in front of a monitor and will rob you of your time as quickly as Garrett robs others of their loot. The master thief is brought to life by the very talented Stephen Russell, with Terri Brosius of System Shock fame voicing Viktoria. I recommend Thief Gold on the merits of its story, gameplay and atmosphere. It is a very good game, considered by many to be a pioneer of the Stealth genre. It stands as testament to Looking Glass Studios as a game developer. Praise the Builder!

So close to perfection...

Odds are, the folks purchasing Thief Gold either played it when it was new, or wished they had. For those, this almost satisfies. The gameplay is fantastic - exactly what Thief was, and should be. That's the good news. The bad news: the GOG.com port doesn't have any cutscenes that tell the story, and Thief's cutscenes were notoriously edgy and cool. Without them, it's a bunch of well-crafted missions with no discernible plot. YouTube to the rescue: all cutscenes are available, in order, at the following link. And since you can alt-tab out of Thief to reach your desktop, you can actually keep up with the story - but it's hardly immersive that way. That's why I can't give it a 5 star rating.
