All the effort in vain [HEAVY SPOILERS]
Albeit it had serious flaws gameplay-wise, The Way was a very inspiring game... right until I finished it. Throughout the whole story there is a sense of hope, a sense of possibility, no matter how slim or distant, that you can succeed in your impossible mission. Yes, the tone and themes are grim and foreboding, or often very contemplative. Yet the game presents this grand, epic atmosphere of eternity and ascension that sweeps across every scene, giving the promise of salvation at the end. The hero of the story is determined to find "the way", no matter the obstacles, no matter the challenges that stand in his path, and the whole narrative supports the notion that in the end, mind shall triumph over matter, and we get to see our happy ending. But the problem is, you cannot earn your happy ending. Thing is, the finale is downright heart-breaking. The hero doesn't return his loved one to life, he loses his faithful companion, and wastes years of his life to achieve an ultimately futile task. You get two endings, both of which can technically be considered "bittersweet", but they only enhanced the sense of regret I felt when I completed the game. Yes, you get to save an entire alien race from virtual oblivion, but in the scope of the hero's personal tragedy, that is relatively minor solace. Not to mention there was a strange time/space traveler motif that was left unexplained in the end for no discern-able reason. "Without death, life is meaningless" - phah, what a ridiculous closing line. I would like to elaborate further, but this review is under symbol-count constraint, so I will leave it so. Also, the game was extremely short; I finished it in just under 10 hours, and half of that time was ad nauseam repetition of "cheap death" platforming/chasing/bullet-hell sequences. I only give it two stars because of the developer's dedication to create something memorable. Well, better luck next time.
