Risk-like battle game

The Transamire Campaigns is essentially a series of Risk-battles. That is, you battle with numbers of generic units over a map broken into areas, onto which you are randomly deployed at the start of the battle, and then at turn end receive reinforcements based on the amount of the map you control. The dice mechanic is slightly different - one die per unit, add them up, high roll wins; units are capped at 8 per area: overall that is faster than Risk and the odds of winning feel similar though less swingy. Reinforcements are randomly deployed to your areas at turn end; you earn one per area controlled. There is a sequence of battles is handled on a "meta-map" - usually you start with 2 meta areas and have a choice of reinforcing your troops or starting a battle with a neighbour. There are also some cards you can spend that have some influence on battle outcome. If you like Risk, you'll probably like this: the interface is smooth; each battle is on a random map; the AI plays a good game. It does however have the problem of Risk that your chance of winning is largely determined by the random placement of your troops on the board at the outset of battle - if you are near a defendable section and have most of your troops clumped you have a chance. It is also possible that you will be wiped out before you even get to have a turn. This is not as bad as it sounds as you only lose a "meta-area" if the AI team that initiated the battle is the winner: if one of the other factions wins the battle, then you keep your map area. It also can take a long time to play as each battle ends up with a 2p battle as opponents are eliminated, and you are evenly matched it can go on a long time. The same is true on the meta-map too where you and an opponent can trade an area back and forth with progressing the game.

One strong point is a weakness.

This game is supposedly based on dice rolls which dictates if the attack and defense of any given unit will be succesful. This idea sounds good on paper and can be fun, but the strong point of this game ( gameplay-wise at least) is also it's only weakness, at least in the current version. I've played this game for a few days and I'm not going to lie, I'm not an expert in strategy games, but even my skill level wouldn't help me overcome unbalanced AI that is punishing the players mistake without making any. It's not like I'm complaining just for the sake of complaining, I've had a pleasure of playing some of the more recognizable names in strategy genre, and the trasamire campaigns is not one of them. I'm sure that the campaign can be fun, but in the current version I would highly recommend to try it now, but not in the current version and at full price. This game has potential, but right now it's not worth the nerves that will inevitably be lost while playing.

Risk Spinoff With Style

The core of this game is Risk with some tweaks: 1. Instead of countries with frontiers, your territories are represented by circle connected by lines (in my opinion, less realistic, but easier to visualise) 2. Fights on territories are all or nothing. The winner has no casualties and the loser loses all his troups 3. While still fairly random, fight results follow a pattern: A defender with 1 more troop than the attacker wins the overwelming majority of the time, a defender with an equal number of troops as the attacker wins most of the time, a defender with 1 less troop than the attacker loses most of the time and a defender with 2 less troops than the attacker loses an overwelming majority of the time 4. The number of troops you get (which are randomly placed) are based on your largest connected group of territories 5. The maximum number of troops you can have on a territory is 8 I think the modifications to the risk rules make for a faster paced, better tactical experience and there are a couple of takeaways that will help you win most of your battles (I won't share mine not to spoil your fun). Don't get me wrong though, like Risk, randomness is still a large part of the equation (especially with troop placement) and you will lose some battles through no fault of your own (and if you expect all battles to be winable through tactics, you should skip this game). But like a war, individual battles don't determine if you win or lose: battles are triggered by players attacking each other on an overland map: all the players will be present in that battle and to claim the part of the map under attack from the defender, the attacker needs to be the one who wins the battle, else the defender keeps it. A "level" will involve many such battles and if you win most of them, you are good. Add to that colorful graphics and some story choices at the end of each level that impacts the ending and you got a nice colorful Risk spinoff with plenty of style.

Risk-managing strategy

Really enjoying this. It's a Risk-like but the ruleset is deeper. Your reinforcements depend on the largest chain of regions you control, not the total count. That means a smaller smarter force can break up and defeat a larger one. You get ability cards to control the "meta" maps on which you fight the individual battles. Those let you setup ambushes, place extra troops, or outright "nuke" the enemy. You don't have to clear the map, there's a "Claim Victory" button for when you're in the lead. The AI feel good. They talk a lot and seem pretty aware of what's happening on the battlefield. Caught me by surprise a couple times. Lastly, there's a branching story. Sometimes it lets you adjust map size, make alliances, pick an objective, get extra cards, that sort of thing. For example, the peasants can back a noble pretender to the throne, getting a ton of ability cards at the expense of their ideals. It's interesting to see the different endings. There are a lot of little details that show care, like the mouseover faction descriptions changing based on who you're playing as. It's good stuff.

Nice graphics but that's all

This game looked nice on the screenshots but that's the only good thing about it. The heroes have no differences other than the campaign text that is boring anyway. No compelling story and no meaningful decisions. Even their combat taunts are not worth the time to read them. The main part of the game would be about strategy but everything is controlled by RNGs and the user's strategy almost makes no difference. You can easily get defeated while still making your best moves because your bigger armies lose the fights and the reinforcements constantly arrives to the backwater tiles. And finally, it is repetitive, you are always fighting the exact same figths, no progression and no new skill along the journey.
