Doesn't make sense
I'm at 20 hours and I decided to stop playing the 10th Anniversary, because this game doesn't make any sense to me. The Settlers 2 is one of my the most favourite games, I think it would land in my personal top 10 list. The original is so wonderfully playable even 20 years after the release late and honestly I cannot think of any reasonable way to fix or refresh it. Every single element is in its proper place, including the wonderfully functional graphics. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the remake from 2006, which grew old to me after only 20 hours of playing the campaign missions. At its base, it's a faithful copy of the original, but various "refreshed" features are so baffling and unnecessary, they led to breaking the original's balance. First off, the 3D implementation is absolutely useless, it doesn't improve the gameplay - it makes it worse. While in the original ground levels could be easly told from the first glance and you could plan your building ahead of time, it's not the case in the remake. Building roads is irritiating, you need to destroy them all the time and put them again just to make sure you will be able to fit vital structures. You can't even open multiply windows! The AI is flawed and often it's really hard to figure out why a mine didn't receive its food which is lying around in storehouses. And there are maps. They're all awful. They're much bigger than the original's which leads to expanding and expanding with boring attacking and defending outposts, while you have no need to take care of your economy. While you would win on the original's map right after completing the build-up and simply rushing down your opponent, in the remake you will sit through pointless campaigns of soldiers hitting each others, conquering 10+ enemy's outpost until you reach the portal (in the campaign). It quickly turns into a chore and a waste of time. It's better to play the original, which is - eh - just better.
