Description

Oliver Cobblestone can see and communicate with a dead. Not the dead, just a one Englebert Picklebender who has been in an ethereal entanglement with Oliver for many years. Together they run The Phantom Fellows, a paranormal investigation service that provides the breathers that hire them peace from hauntings, while bringing closure and rest to the floaters who torment the living, and often, themselves.

Take control of Oliver and Englebert in this point and click adventure comedy as you explore the town of Elderberry, Colorado and spend 7 days in the life of The Phantom Fellows. Share laughs with the living and the respiratorily challenged in a game where exploration is rewarded and there is more to the story than meets the eye.

Use Oliver's ability to... be alive, or switch to Englebert if the physical world is in the way. Negotiate with spirits, some of which seek closure, others a long lost possession and even some who just enjoy a good pranking- I mean, haunting. Don't forget to also provide proof of service to the breather that hired you, they will need more than Oliver's word for it and seeing is believing!

Throughout your week with The Phantom Fellows you will meet many breathers, plenty of floaters and as you navigate through each day's task, something more malevolent begins lurking in the shadows, with it's eye on Oliver and an aim set on something bigger, something... otherworldly.

  • Narrative based adventure game where the writing and the story come first.
  • Hand-drawn pixel art and animations!
  • Walk or float around the environments, freely explore the world you're in.
  • Switch between Oliver and Englebert! Sometimes being dead has its perks. Maybe. Switching between the two unlocks in Day 2.
  • 7 Playable Days: Each day features it's own goals and characters, while an over-arcing story builds to an unavoidable confrontation!
  • Fast Travel Map: Unlocks in Day 3, freely explore the town of Elderberry, revisit the location of previous days for more interactions, world building and alternative puzzle solutions!
  • Real World Puzzle Reasoning: Some puzzles have alternate solutions based on simple reasoning- you never have to leave the location of the day, but if you saw something in a previous day's location that would help you in your current day, you can go get it and use it!
  • Dialog-based Hint System: Englebert often plays the role of mentor to Oliver. You can speak to him for advice on what to do, and he will give you hints with increasing levels of detail, along with the option to have him stop so you may take as much or as little help as you wish.
  • Hotspot Heaven: It's all clickable! Oliver and Englebert will look at and interact with everything and provide you with unique lines, laughter and world building, for doing so.
  • Dual Controls: Optimized for easy, keyboard based control, while maintaining the option to instead point and click.

A true labor of love

The Phantom Fellows is a stand out game in year that turned out to be a great year for adventure games. It hits a sweet spot paying homage to the classic adventure games of the 80's and 90's while providing modern sensibilities that are greatly appreciated. The puzzles are clever without being overly difficult. One aspect of the puzzle design that I appreciated was the ability to go back to different locations and find alternative solutions. To be as spoiler free as possible, I felt really smart when I had to hammer something and remembered where a hard surface was earlier in the game. The graphics are chunky pixel art at it's finest and does have a Dark Side Detective vibe. I appreciate the modern additions especially the reflective lighting. It's one of the tiny modern touches that elevates the experience of this game. The dialogue is wonderful. While humor is a matter of personal taste I find it quite funny and even had a few laugh out loud moments. There's a Clerks like banter between the main characters that I find charming. I love the fact that almost every object is clickable and has unique dialogue. For example looking at the stars on a different screens will give different responses. This game will be compared to Darkside Detective and the Blackwell series. Having played all of the games I can say it stands as a distinctive experience and the feel of The Phantom Fellows sets it apart. If you like adventure games this is a must try. If you're getting into the genre it's a good entry point.

Funniest Adventure Game I've Ever Played

The Phantom Fellows has probably the funniest dialog I've ever seen in an adventure game. The characters are wacky, the art is gloriously chunky and glowy, and music is gloriously synthwave. It's also a long one, about 15 hours, depending on how much you want to explore. There are multiple solutions to the puzzles, and overall it's just a blast to play.

This is excellent

This game is truly a labor of love. The creator clearly has a deep appreciation for the old-school Sierra point-and-click style. This comes as no surprise to me, as I discovered this game through the Classic Gamers Guild Podcast hosted by the developer. The game is incredibly funny, although I'm sure I don't catch half of the jokes. For instance, I accidentally stumbled upon the 'Walked Like a Janitor / Understood, will comply' achievement. As a side note, I played most of the Space Quest games back in the day, and I had no idea about the pun in the main character's name until it was mentioned in the CGG Podcast. Extra side note: English isn't my native language. The puzzles so far have been quite easy and logical. Unlike many Sierra games, this one features an excellent guiding system for when you find yourself stuck, which is highly appreciated. I'm currently in Day 3 with a little guidance from my companion. The help wasn't really needed but I wanted to try it out. I'm sure I'll be using it later on, because of the limited time I can spend gaming.

It's not Darkside Detective

Mostly got it because it looks & sounds a lot like Darkside Detective, which I loved. While the atmosphere and humor is similar, this one takes itself a bit more serious as an adventure game... and I'm not sure I like it. A lot of the puzzles are just bizarre to me. I started reading the walkthrough as soon as I left the first tutorial level because I got stuck. Often times, the solutions don't make sense to me even after I read the walkthrough. There's a "solve a puzzle multiple ways" thing going on in every level, but this only makes the puzzles more confusing: now you have 15 useless items in your inventory that you'll never use. That makes it 10x more time consuming to brute force click every item with every other item in your inventory or the level. I'm currently sort of stuck in the very first screen of level 5, where I cannot leave the screen because I "have to talk to the client" - but I already have, multiple times, and there are no dialogue options left. The sense of humor is similar to Darkside Detective, but a bit over the top. Like another reviewer, I often have no clue what they're talking about and end up skipping a lot. That said, the graphics, music, and atmosphere are lovely. The OST has a strong Stranger Things vibe. I just wish it was a bit more accessible to people who don't want to click every pixel on the screen 1000x.

This game is truly something special

I just spent the last 17 hours laughing. Sometimes out loud, sometimes in a head-shaking way, and sometimes a few moments after the dialogue ended, in an 'ohhh!' sort of way. Even the UI is funny, it's as if every single button, every hotspot, everything in this game is packed with meaning—everything in the game is waiting to be found. For example, you can click the "The Phantom Fellows" logo in the load game screen. And click it again. And again. It's a brilliant little gag and a small example of probably a thousand gags like this. There isn't a single inch of this game that wasn't shown love by it's developer. The fact that this game was made by one person is crazy. The two main characters, Oliver and Englebert, have what is the best, most sincere and sharpest banter between them and they are two entirely different people. The game is largely a comedy but there are some surprisingly sweet moments between the characters, especially as the game goes on. You end up with a connection to them and come the final dialogue between Oliver and Englebert I found myself a bit emotional, truly feeling what Englebert felt. The puzzles are fun, they make you want to solve them. The in-game hint system is brilliant, When used, I was able to get just the hint or 2 I needed to solve things in a way that still felt like I did it on my own. The soundtrack (also made by the writer, programmer and artist) is special. I'm not even sure it has business being so good, tucked away in an indie adventure game. To say it has Stranger Things energy is to do it somewhat of a disservice because it's deeper, more complex than just that. I'll be purchasing it. Lastly, when you play, make sure you travel around town during the days you can. I laughed myself into tears over some of these scenes. In fact, when you play, do yourself a favor and take time to just explore the world. "Look At" and "Interact" with everything, because it isn't often that we get comedic writing of the quality.
