Beyond good and evil like

I've been waiting for this!
At launch discount, this game really was a steal. The Gunk skillfully mixes Beyond Good & Evil and Prince of Persia 2008 with a bit of Crime Scene Cleaner. There are some traps, precious few enemies, and there's even boss fights of sorts, but you'll mostly be spending your time leasurely scouting out the area (there's no map, so you might get a little lost), admiring lush vegetation, scanning new discoveries, cleaning up gunk, collecting resources, figuring out how to proceed. Combat remains a side note, and that's just great. The conversation between the two main protagonists, mostly via radio, often feels intimate, I almost felt like I was intruding. It's a little overacted sometimes and the conflict may feel a bit forced towards the climax, but the themes are still very relevant and the empathy is something that I wish more games had these days. The developers are never breaking the fourth wall, they're never pouring out irony, they're never trying too hard to be funny. They're preserving the integrity of their dystopian vision first and foremost. That's immersion done right. The limited scope of the game is really refreshing, it feels like it was planned as a AA experience from start to finish. It never gets pretentious and tries to tell you it's more than it actually is, it never sandboxes itself into oblivion. "The Gunk" has a limited open world, a tight and consistent game design, three relevant characters, and content for about 12 hours of smooth and satisfying platformer gameplay. It ends before it becomes boring, which I really can't say about most gaming experiences these days (not even Thunderful's).
