Renaissance is the one to get.

The Guild II is an amazing game - nothing else like it out there. Having said that, The Guild II: Renaissance is the most "up to date" and the version that is currently being patched by fans over on the runeforge forums. I suggest waiting for that one to come to GOG or find it elsewhere. If you patch it up with the beta patch on the forums and use some of the fan-mods/patches you'll have a much better experience.

Good game, but...

This is a great game, but unfortunately, is filled with bugs. The economy in the game trashes itself, there are a lot of problems with AI, and there are a host of other bugs. It's still a game that'll give you hours of fun with it's in depth economic and political strategy (and a little combat) but it'll also disappoint you many times with those bugs.

The best game that never was

The concept is just phenomenal, the gameplay brilliant. Unfortunately, as has already been mentioned it suffers from bugs. Playing this will give you carpal tunnel (this is actually why I can't play it, it's not just a joke). You're supposed to be able to automate the game but you'll end up clicking so much you'll wreck your hand. It's still worth getting though. Sure you'll end up cursing the bugs and flaws of what would have been your favourite game otherwise but..even flawed, it is a must own.

Worth getting even with Renaissance

While most people here would have you believe that Renaissance is the only version to ever get, Pirates of the European seas is also a worthwhile buy, if not at full price then during a sale. It improves upon many key points of the base game and fixes some of its bugs, though it does also introduce a few more. Some of the changes introduced in Renaissance change the gameplay in ways that aren't necessarily for everyone, and you might have more fun if you play Pirates instead. It goes on sale for 2 euro every other month, and at that price is very much worth it, even with Renaissance around. The only part of it that I'd recommend you avoid is the multiplayer, as that is hands down better in modded Renaissance.

Amazing game but way to buggy

I really like the game - creating your own little enterprise, using legal and illegal methods... Great. Still because of many bugs I only give two stars. It is really annoying that the game crashes every once in a while without reason. Like this I had to redo and redo stuff and I got fed up after playing two days. Next time I play, is when there is a fix for the problem... Not sure that will arrive though
