Nice old thing - but totally implausible
It still plays kind of ok, but the plot is ludicrous. Better play other Sierra Classics.

I’m amazed by the glowing reviews
I liked the first Laura Bow game (Colonels Bequest), but this didn’t have the same atmosphere in my opinion. No suspense/tension, no fleshed-out characters. The voice acting was so cringe worthy and I just couldn’t listen any more (felt like someone doing a caricature impression of stereotypical ‘southern belle’ and ‘snooty rich guy’ people rather than natural voices). I agree with other reviews that it seemed like a parody and broke immersion. Typical of Sierra of the era, it relies on random triggers to events based on innocuous and unrelated things you do elsewhere (an analogy I used for a game from the same period was: Imagine the people you work with didn’t appear unless you opened a certain window in your house before leaving and waved to your neighbour, leaving you trapped in ‘pre work’ time until you guessed at the solution). How was this ever considered fun or good game design?! You’d have to resort to walkthroughs. Again, I know it’s typical of games at the time (and perhaps the genre at large) that you’d be lacking a really obvious essential day to day item and have to do a series of steps to get it… but not being able to leave the starting location for something so easy to resolve (that should have been given to you by now) was just a road block to getting the story going. Having to use the note book to initiate certain dialogue by combining locations, people and facts is a nice idea, but quickly devolves into trial and error. A more standard dialogue tree would have worked better in my opinion. Overall I just couldn’t get on with it and struggle to think of anything positive to say.

A good adventure game
I like vintage adventure quests.
