Description
The 13th Doll is a game created by and for fans of The 7th Guest series! It began as an all volunteer, freeware passion project, but evolved into a fully licensed game.

In the 7th Guest, evil toymaker Henry Stauf built a mansion, and invited 6 guests. A 7th Guest, Tad, snuck in and was trapped there, afflicted by mystifying spirits, dolls and the ghosts of the other guests - until he defeated Stauf.

The 13th Doll ties in with the events of The 7th Guest. A decade after Tad managed to escape the mansion, he is still haunted by the souls, dolls, and Stauf's victims he left behind. So haunted, in fact, that the young man now resides in a mental institution - misunderstood, plagued by guilt and obsessed with one idea: to escape the dreary padded walls of his asylum cell, return to the mansion - the site of his innermost fears - to rescue those he left behind and defeat Stauf once and for all!

Soon, a new doctor by the name of Richmond arrives in the asylum. Naïve to the legacy of Henry Stauf, and equally bewildered and intrigued by the fantastic legend, the staunch rationalist plans to take Tad on a cathartic trip back to the mansion.

This unconventional therapy attempt rapidly turns into a fateful journey, unravelling Tad and Richmond's contrasting worldviews and leading the unlikely duo straight into a horrifying vortex of lies, illusions, lunacy and death. And soon a blood-curdling question arises: Have the two visitors really made their way to Stauf's harrowing home on their own accord or are they mere pawns in a much grander, inescapable scheme?

While playing The 13th Doll, a lot of time will be spent navigating through gloomy sites, concealed rooms and maze areas from an immersive first person perspective. Thanks to the game being developed in Unity3d, this becomes an advanced and engaging experience, as the engine allows free movement and a fully accessible environment in detailed high-definition visuals. For the first time, players will be able to explore every inch of Stauf's residence and face all its eerie inhabitants up close and personal. A plethora of interactive, delightfully animated objects will bring even the most desolate locations to life.

Logic puzzles were an integral part of The 7th Guest's gameplay, and The 13th Doll follows suit. We've designed 26 original brain-teasers, all varying in style and offering a wide array of intellectual challenges. These diabolical creations are found throughout the game - whether it be card tricks, pathfinding and chess challenges, or even artificial intelligence puzzles versus Henry Stauf himself!.

Uneven experience, underwhelming

Having only played The 11th Hour, not being able to run The 7th Guest, I can only compare this game to that. In comparison, at times it's the exact same game, at times it's subpar. Meaning that at best it's a carbon copy, rather than a continuation of the series, which is the problem with every fan game. The game is also divided into two segments, both giving the player a completely different experience. If you play as the doctor, most of the puzzles are a breeze, either because the solution requires only a few moves, or the puzzle is easy to brute force, or the puzzle uses a simple enough mechanic to understand. If you play as the mental patient, puzzles are much harder, but not any more fun or rewarding. No matter who you play as, the plot is fairly similar, since not much happens in the house, besides a few bad jump scares. The acting is pretty bad, and not in the so-bad-it's-good way of the previous games. The visuals and lighting don't help either, making ghosts seem full of life, and makes actors look comical. There are also animations that appear when you click on certain objects, but when playing the doctor, they're far and few between and aren't very good. Playing the mental patient they're better, but not enough to convey a creepy atmosphere. Not that the game manages to convey any atmosphere at all. Unlike previous games you can't freely roam the rooms, instead you advance in a linear fashion, from puzzle to puzzle, and you can't advance until you solve the current puzzle. You can also fast travel using the map, which also tells you which rooms still have puzzles to solve or items you missed, making roaming the house no longer needed. You simply jump from puzzle to puzzle, while the plot advances without you noticing. It doesn't take long for the young promising doctor to become crazier than his patient, without much prodding from outside forces. Some animations hiccup, there are visual glitches, and the music is like two songs being played at once,

A pretty good farewell to the mansion

I can not tell you this is the best game in the franchise. In fact, I would argue both other 7th Guest games are better when push comes to shove. But this is a legendary franchise, so falling short of the previous games does not make it bad. In fact, if you are a fan of puzzle games and the either the 7th Guest or 11th Hour in particular, you are doing yourself a disservice to miss this new outing. You will enjoy this, warts and all.

So true to the originals

The crew that made this game did an exceptional job in putting this together, right down to the campy acting and other wonderful quirks which made The 7th Hour and The 11th Guest such delightfully fun romps at their times of release. More impressive is the team's ability to lure Robert Hirschboeck back into the role of being Henry Stauf once again. From the maniacal laugh to the demonic-sounding growl, and the video appearances, Mr. Hirschboeck's appearance makes this game instantly legitimate as part of the series because, to put it bluntly, anyone other than Mr. Hirschboeck in the role of Henry Stauf could not have made The 13th Doll anything more than a cheap and unfinished continuation. The devs put their hearts and souls into this project, and it shows, as they're bigger fans of the franchise than I thought I was. I latched onto their efforts back when they swore it would be free upon release, but I lost interest after a long time of nothing. When I finally checked in again, I gladly paid for the $13 or whatever it cost, just because I wanted to support the group, and found they had delivered everything I'd hoped for. The Team, Trilobyte, Mr. Hirschboeck, Devine, Landeros, and all others, have collaborated wonderfully to let this happen, and I think it's exceptional.
