Not without problems
This is a solid game and most people will have some fun with it, making it well worth the price. But (at least in version 1.3.0) it has its limits, too. Enemies are constantly spawning. Unfortunately most are just trash that provide neither challenge nor interesting loot. Basically there are only three types of enemies (cannot pass through solid tiles, can pass through all tiles but not fly, can pass through all tiles and fly) with one or more of three types of attacks (melee, beams/projectiles that cannot pass through solid tiles, beams/projectiles that can pass through all tiles). This is mostly a missed opportunity to better integrate with the sandbox part (e.g. more special tiles and items that interact with particular enemy types). Most bosses have some special behavior, but overall enemy AI isn't varied and difficulty is low, making combat feel like a mediocre platformer. A lot of items cannot be crafted. They are either dropped by enemies or found in chests randomly distributed throughout the world. This is forcing you onto predefined pathways through the game, preventing the player from playing the game at his own pace (Tip: don't upgrade your health without careful planning; a lot of random events that can throw you off balance are tied to having higher health). There is enough content to keep the player interested for quite some time, but even in small worlds this content is spread thin over quite a large area. As a new unexperienced player expect to be grinding for several days real time to even acquire equipment that can mine all tiles present at the start of the game (Tip: look for guides showing how to defeat the eater of worlds with starting equipment). There is a large selection of items. Unfortunately most of these are copies with minimally different looks and stats. This is also true of crafting recipes, cluttering the primitive crafting interface. None of these problems prevent having fun, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

Wonderful game.
Just realized I had this game for years and never reviewed it. Loved it so much I have bought multiple copies of both it and its soundtrack. Across different platforms. (i am reviewing the multiplayer LAN experience. As I have never played much of this online.) This game is about starting out in a randomly generated wilderness and not only surviving and thriving, but against ever increasing odds. For as you progress in the game the game ups the challenges that you will have to face. This also ups the content that is available to you to play with. Such small things as increasing your health for the first time will onlock new content. I may have seem million of games that look like this. I have yet to play another game that plays like this. Can't even call this a 2D version of Minecraft. Though they share very many similarities. Terrrarias tiered content progression system leads to a much different experience. Where you feel more like you are tryign to beat a game instead of play in a openworld sandbox. That combined with characer selection being independant of world selection world sizes being limited and customizable lead to a extremely different game style that will apeal to a different group of players. I love minecraft. I love Terraria though for completely different reasons. They are both great games. If you have never played Terraria pleas get ahold of a copy and give it a try. You won't regret it. Your enjoyment of it will likely vary from mine. Still, I can't think of any player type that would consider this a waste of time.

BEST 30 SECONDS OF GAMING, EVER!
After spending 10-15 minutes creating the perfect character and the world to put him in, the game started. I didn't know what to do, so made my character walk to the right, into a large pool of water. Started talking to an NPC at the bottom of the large pool of water, who said he could tell me what to do. Then drowned. 10/10 Best Simulation Of The Futility Of Existence, Ever. (Sorry for the STEAM style 'comedy' review. I couldn't help myself)

Tenfold its price in content and fun.
I own the game on Steam. I got it on a sale years ago not really sure what it was. Thought it would be a fun little game to run around in for an hour or two and then shelf. But gee gollygoshpops, I ended up spending 160+ hours in the game. There is an absolutely criminal amount of content in this game, and though it might seem shallow, simple and cute on the surface..it can be very deep, complex and brutal if you just smash the right things and progress far enough. The game doesn't really tell you or help you too much in figuring out what to do or how to progress, you're more or less on your own in figuring things out and experiment - well except the NPC named "guide." If you talk to him he will give you some vague hints on what to do next, in order to progress in the game. Another tip with the "guide," you can ask him about items you have, in order to learn about which crafting recipes they are part of. Very fun game to play co-op also.
