So, I owned this game on steam for more than five years.
The GOG version is compatible with TModloader, the official unofficial mod framework, but it is very hard to install mods as usually they're put in Steam Workshop.
I really with GOG can have a negotiation with Terraria modders and somehow making modding GOG version easier.
However, unlike Minecraft, the stock (vanilla) feeling of Terraria is still extremely polished.
5/5.
It is a really casual game and GOG, with its online installer, makes it truly portable and can be played in some secondary schools that block Steam.
One's first impression of this game is that it is "2D Minecraft" And it certainly takes inspration from it, and builds upon it to become it's own identity. And man, it is a unique game jam packed full of content that is obtained from randomly generated worlds to call your own.
While this game originally released in 2011, it has recieved massive new content updates over the years to really bring a ton into the game. Many different ores can be mined to craft into new tools & weapons that never break, enemies will drop items you can use to craft to make more items, accessories to improve the abiltiies of your character. There are many different blocks you can collect and craft to make the buildings of your dreams.
To add to it, there is a lot to explore. The Dark and Infectious Corruption and Crimson biomes, Jungle, Ice, Desert and more. the biome variety adds a lot of color and excitement to your world, and each time you make a new one, it is completely new and unique.
What is the purpose of continuing to collect stronger weapons & equipment? It is to fight the game's bosses naturally! From the Eye of Cthulhu, the Eater of Worlds, to the Wall of Flesh. There are several bosses that have become iconic overtime, and many more bosses exist to be found and fought in this game.
The soundtrack has it's charm in the classic retro chiptune style.
As of this review, I own this game on both Steam and GOG, and I have around 2,500 hours invested in this game between both of them. It is a game that is addictive and contains high amounts of replayability. Even though the final boss can be found and defeated in a matter of 20-50 hours of gameplay time, you will want to do so much more in the world of Terraria after you've explored and built in one World. You'll want to do it all over again.
Highly recommended for almost any type of gamer. It is only $10 but this game is far more valuable than $10. After experiencing it, 100's of hours will pass by without you realizing.
While I didn't think I was a sandbox sort of person, this game ate my life.
There is something so satisfying about Terraria. Exploring, building things, collecting resources, building better things, finding new traders, building even bigger and more ridiculously stupendous things, mining a shaft down into hell to fight a giant monster made of eyes/mouths...
Honestly, there is so much to do. It is a gorgeously rendered pixel game, each randomly generated map blending together seamlessly to make a massively open world (even if it is 2D). There's no hand-holding or tutorials (though you do get a "guide" NPC who might be useful); you're dropped into the world with some very basic tools and off you go. Along with day/night cycles complete with zombies, biomes have different weathers as well as randomised big events (like being attacked by a giant eyeball, or slime falling from the sky).
Fancy being a melee character? Ranged but don't fancy the good ol' bow and arrow route? Or maybe magic's more your thing? Each tier of weapons and armour gives you choices to mix and match your play style, later allowing you to upgrade your gear if you can't face crafting another set and hoping for the best modifiers.
If you're more of a gatherer/builder type, there are so many material combinations to craft and put together. I love how imaginative it allows the community to be: anything goes from a floating glasshouse built on a cloud, a sunken steampunk submarine, or just a little hut by the sea. You might need to invest in some defense for your bases, but otherwise you can build to your heart's content.
And that's before you hit Hardmode...
In Terraria, the sky (and map edge, natch) is the limit.
TL;DR: A 2D Minecraft game that has A TON of things to do. If you liked Minecraft, this game is right up your alley!
A 2D sandbox that doesn't seem like much at first but once you dig deep into it, you realize you're in for a huge adventure! If you like Minecraft and 2D pixel-art, this game is for you.
- World creation. You can have a small, medium and large world and you can also create multiple worlds, each having its unique characteristics, although these are picked at random;
- Character creation. You can create as many characters as you want. Plus you can pick between Softcore, Mediumcore and Hardcore, which defines what kind of punishment you get from dying;
- Lots of NPCs. You start off with a Guide man that will give you hints and tells you how to craft items depending on the material you show him. Once you find out you can build houses to attract more NPCs, you get even more people, like a nurse, a merchant and a demolitionist;
- Bosses and events! It has quite a handful of bosses that unlock more stuff after defeating them. Some of them can be summoned and others will show up out of nowhere. The events bring a new set of enemies and rewards. They mostly happen at random, but you can make them happen too.
- Normal and Expert modes. Normal mode is the base difficulty, but Expert mode lives up to its name, you have to know the game upside down or be stupidly brave to attempt it. Enemies hit harder, they resist more damage and bosses behave differently. Extremely tough, but they give you new rewards.
- Online multiplayer. You can play with your friends online or join any server and progress through the game that way. No console cross-platform though.
- Mods. Thanks to tModLoader, you can make an already-extensive game even more extensive, the mod community is fantastic and it's worth trying out new stuff.
I had to cut out stuff because of the length restriction on GoG, that's how MUCH I love this game. 100% recommendable!
