The game is decent initself,, if you like digital card playing games.
But this money milking through DLC's is just bad practice. There is a myriad of DLC to extend on th "base" game. There is no gold, full, complete or whatever edition that would let you have to whole experience.
I hate when such games come with their business practisces to GoG
As far as the base game goes, it is a pretty accurate representation of the Talisman tabletop game. You pick your character, traverse the map, gain power and enter the inner circles until you reach the end.
Th AI will occasionally cheese you to death and there are some glitches and bugs, but the devs offer support for the title and often new patches are released.
The base game is worth playing, because of these things - it is a faithful representation of the board game and it has active support.
Why 1 star review?
Because instead of releasing the game and 2-3-4 BIG EXPANSIONS to it, they decided to release a two-digit number of small DLC packages, which include a couple of characters or a handful of new events. The complete collection of the additional content reaches to over $100. The way it goes, they will probably release additional DLC to pile it up even more.
I do not know why everyone thinks that the Paradox approach to selling your game is so good, but it has been infesting the market more and more. Yes, I understand that the continuing support has to be funded in some way, but that is where the 2-3-4 big expansions, one released each year could do you good work. When done making expansions, just make a new game. It is not that difficult, trust me.
In addition to TOO MANY DLCs. MANY game breaking bugs.
This game has DRM. You need to start the game through GOG Galaxy the first time or otherwise multiplayer doesn't work. Additionally creating an Account doesn't work either. If you already started without GOG Galaxy, you need to uninstall and also remove the savegames and then reinstall...
I haven't played the physical board game, but this digital version seems a good conversion; interface is mostly OK, with some minor issues.
For those who don't know the original, you move around a map with concentric areas, gated by obstacles that force you to "level up", which you do by defeating enemies or encountering events who alter your stats. The game is surprisingly dynamic and even the base game with no DLC has lots of variations due to the available characters -their special abilities (small rule changes or additions) are just enough to make them different.
I'm frankly surprised a board game can have this complexity with seemingly basic rules. One nitpick -there's no included rules: the in-game help opens a browser showing the rules, and you'll want to spend some ten minutes with them before playing. There's nothing overly complex, I don't play board games and after reading them once never had to come back to them, but still you'll have to read them once, or you won't be able to play at your full potential.
There's lots of DLC and it seems too granular, but believe me: the base game has enough variety (characters and support for house and variant rules) to last you a long time. As for DLC, I'd suggest waiting for a bulk sale.
Trying all the different characters is quite fun, some of them are very unique, and adapting your playstyle to their abilities and matchups can be very rewarding.
The game has autosave -just quit whenever you want and on the next run you'll find a list of your pending games.
So this is an easy 4-star, maybe 5-star game, right?
Sadly, no. I'm a solo player, and Talisman keeps cheating with the dice rolls, despite the AI being quite capable. Playing solo against the AI it's a losing proposition -you'll get dice rolled to defeat and it's painfully obvious. It's not that they gang up against you -it's just the cumulative effect of their good rolls against your bad rolls is overwhelming.
Buy only if you never play solo.
I mainly played the base game against AI. The game experience apparently changes if you add a lot of the expansions, as well as playing multiplayer. I got the base game on sale for $2, so even if I do not play a lot more than I already have, cannot complain about value.
It's an adaptation of a board game, which means that the core gameplay has been tested, although it is obviously not as flashy as a computer-only game, which can add more mechanics easily. This is what I wanted, but tastes will be different.
The game design takes a bit of getting used to. Each turn comes down to a few die rolls. The strategy revolves around which part of the board to concentrate on, and when to take a run at the Crown of Command (at the end of the map, which is behind strong barriers). The longer you wait, the more powerful you get. The key to enjoying the game is realising that you should not wait forever, you need to try to make a run at the Crown when there is still a chance of failing. The strategy comes from trying to judge the odds of outcomes, and adapting to the strengths of your character.
For the base game, when you set up the game, you should set the "No More Lives" option in the house rules (third tab of the game setup). This prevents healing once a player reaches the Crown. Human players would probably force a quicker ending, but the AI can go into a loop where it heals itself almost as fast as you can damage them. This can make the game drag on too long. Most of the DLC packs offer alternate endings that force a faster end.
The developers open up one expansion each week, so you can try it out. There is no need to rush out and buy a lot of DLC on first purchase, since they would make the game complexity overwhelming for a new player.
