A good remaster
If you liked the original, you should absolutely consider this version. The price might seem a bit high at first, but if you’re a true fan, it’s worth every cent. The game now supports OpenAL, which adds a subtle echo effect that really improves immersion and atmosphere. Textures and meshes, including weapons, have been upgraded tastefully without changing the soul of the original. Facial animations are now included, and the UI has been slightly reworked to feel more polished while staying true to the classic style. Every single drawing seems to have been recreated as vector art, which makes them look much sharper and cleaner. The cutscenes have been fully re-rendered in HD using proper methods, not cheap AI upscaling. There’s also a bonus section filled with behind-the-scenes content, interviews, original sketches, and more. Mod support is still available, and the coding has been improved for modern systems. It runs very well on Linux through Proton. In short, this is the version that long-time fans of System Shock 2 have been waiting for. It respects the original while making it feel fresh again.
