Description
Enter Japan in the Age of Warring States. At the center of this role-playing, action-adventure simulation of combat, statesmanship and intrigue, you are a samurai warrior struggling for Honor. More important than life itself, Honor is crucial to achieving your ultimate goal: unifying the country under your noble rule.

In Sword of the Samurai, you will be part of the culture of feudal Japan, and you must learn to live by its rules. To succeed as a samurai, you must think like the samurai. Learn when to leave your sword in its sheath, when to draw it - and what to do with it once it’s drawn. You will fight duels, lead troops on the battlefields, and defend your family against assassins and kidnappers. If you are courageous and honorable, you may advance to become the head of your clan, and warlord of your province. If you master diplomacy and generalship, and outmaneuver your rivals, you may even become Shogun - absolute ruler of Japan. But remember that in all cultures power corrupts - and those who seek absolute power don’t always play by the rules.
  • Unite all 48 warring provinces in common allegiance to you, and earn the title of Shogun, military ruler of all Japan.
  • Computer-controlled opponents make decisions based on your actions -- and on the actions of other rival characters.
  • Vindicate yourself in duels against rivals who would like nothing better than to diminish your Honor.
  • Furious melee action against multiple warriors takes place in castles, villages and rice paddies.
  • Real-time battles involving infantry, cavalry and muskets on battlefields that vary with every conflict.

Don't Believe the Fanboys

Alright, let's be level here. Ignore any 5-star reviews. These people are writing from a place of nostalgia. Every game feels like a masterpiece when you're 6 years old, and it's the only one you own. The controls for this game are HORRIBLE. Not just outdated, but bad for the time it was released. The action sequences are stiff, unresponsive, have uncomfortable key placement, and will only annoy you. The commands themselves are overly complex for a game which utilizes only two buttons and the directional pad. Besides the godawful controls, it's actually a pretty addictive game. The political intrigue is fun to watch play out, and the top-down sections are actually playable. Do I recommend? If you find it on sale, sure. Otherwise, find a roguelike with more manageable controls.

My most played game from 90-92

I loved this game fiercely back in my early teens. This game could easily have been designed by Sid Meier(in fact I think he did design some of the samurai duel mini game). Pirates was/is a fantastic game but this is the one that I kept coming back to and enjoyed just ever so slightly more. The art in this game really creates a feeling of feudal japan and immerses you deeply in the experience in the quest to become a shogun. Unlike the reviewer before me, I actually loved the action mini games especially the infiltration and seeing the rice paddies turn crimson with the blood of my enemies!!! So glad GOG released this.

A honest review.

Beware new players, there is a lot if bias reviews of this game. As a new player, the game itself is interesting but other then that a pain to play. The actual game play is awkward and clumsy due to nonsense controls and poor game mechanics. The duels and battles are not explained in anyway, and once you do figure out what they are you realize how slow and clunky the "fun" parts are in the first place. Over all A great piece of gaming history, but that's all.

One of the best games of all time.

It's been in my top ten games list (the ones i play most) since i first played it in 1991. And one of the games i keep an old spare PC around to play. Thanks to GoG i can have it working on my current PC. Where to start? Well like X-com (Microprose original), Pirates!, Civilization, Alpha Centauri, Darklands, X-wing, Fallout 1+2 and others in their company, Sword of the Samurai IS that good. Not only is it a varied and interesting game experience, but it also feels authentic. It's not simplified to appease to the lowest common denominator (like most modern games), but neither is it so convoluted to be beyond comprehension. No other game actually makes you feel like a Japanese Daimyo climbing his way to greatness. No other game teaches you so simply the broad brush setting and era of this period of Japanese history. No other game depicts it so perfectly and traditionally even in it's low spec and low res old PC graphics. It is a thing of beauty, and art piece. So do your self a favour and get educated and entertained by this great gem of a game. One of the Greats from the Golden Age of PC gaming.

Greatest game I have ever played...

In spite of the age I will never forget this game. How I started playing hoping to attain shogun. Dying at least a dozen times before I even made it to Hatamoto. Trying to get my honor built and received the preferred position only to have a priceless heirloom taken from me in the night to lose honor. To attempt to retake and be forced to commit seppuku. How my family was forced to commit seppuku after I failed to defeat the daimyo in combat and thus was not promoted. Sword of the Samurai is a strategy game at its heart. Troop movement and combat are more meaningful to the game play then sword play or overhead fights. In essence the goal is to go from grokenin (forgive me on spelling, it has been awhile since I have seen it) to Hatamoto to Daimyo to Shogun. How you do that is up to you but you do live with Bushido. Honor, Loyalty and Duty you will be judged on and being the best in all areas will obtain the favored position. However, can also obtain this through subterfuge and general douchebaggery. Performing assassinations and dishonoring fellow vassals can also attain that position. Great game wish there was more at this time I could say. I just can't think of anymore and am truly excited about this release.
