Take the helm of your customised steamship and set sail for the unknown! Sunless Sea is a 2D game of discovery, survival and loneliness set in the award-winning Victorian Gothic universe of Fallen London. Will you succumb to madness and cannibalism on the black waters? Or return home triumphant with a hold full of precious loot?
Events can turn out differently every game - sometimes, even if you make the same choices. Will you lose your sweetheart to a curse? Redeem, betray or consume the Genial Magician? Sell your soul to the Wistful Deviless or spurn her advances? Is the Dawn Machine your salvation, or your doom?
You are the captain. It’s your call.
Light and dark. Stray too far from the gas-lamps of civilisation and your crew will grow fearful and eventually lose their sanity. But there is treasure out there in the darkness…
Upgrade your steamship with powerful engines, flensing cannons, and pneumatic torpedo guns. Or just buy a bigger, better ship.
Hire unique officers like the Haunted Doctor and the Irrepressible Cannoneer. Each has a story to tell, if you can draw it out of them.
Choose from a menagerie of ship’s mascots: the Comatose Ferret, the Wretched Mog, the Elegiac Cockatoo, and more!
Trade silk and souls, mushroom wine, and hallucinogenic honey.
- Very slow paced game
- unfair roll based win/loss events which can lead to unfair deaths
- basically a fancy text based adventure with minor (bad) combat mechanics
- half-hearted RPG elements
- while it's clearly a 'Lovecraftian' world it does not belong in the "Horror" category
and wonder if it actually is a fun to play game: That was my situation and I have given it a try.
This game is not about trading and it's not a RPG. It's about exploring a dark and hostile zeaworld with a too little boat, that could be destroyed every second by monsters or pirates while constant fearing that you starve to death. You travel to islands trying to survive many kinds of horrors.
This game is a no-brainer for you if:
* You like games where some reading is involved, as long as its not that much and is well written. If you played Pillars of Eternity: I enjoy reading the texts in Sunless Sea much more and find it less boring.
* You like H.P. Lovecraft based media. Maybe you read some novels from him or played Arkham Horror or enjoyed some horror in H.P. / Cthullhu related games. This game hits the atmosphere of Lovecraft just perfectly.
* You are looking for a not-so-easy game, where taking a risk might be neccessary, but might also lead to your death - note that on default settings you play on 'Ironmode' so that you have to start from beginning if you die. This makes choices, risks and exploring much more interesting and intense. However, I find the game perfectly fair and you are warned about choices that can be very risky.
I have played 8 hours so far and it seems like I have discovered around 20% of what there is to see.
Developers also have already added more stuff to the game, which I downloaded after starting a new game, so add some more hours of play.
I received this game for free. I honestly only gave it about 2 hours of my time, but that was all that I could stand. This game doesn't know what it wants to be and it punished me for that. It was like reading a book from an author that has JUST enough talent to be in the industry, but not enough talent for anyone to buy his books. Boring. Tedious. More like looking at a power point at work that playing a game. Avoid this horrible game.
Game with great idea, especially if you add submarine concept, with good and stylish graphic, in theory interesting background story but other than that it offers very little. Complex UI, shallow story, everything takes a lot of time and at the end seems pointless and you die. I've been very disappointed by this game. Waste of great idea with interesting climate.
If you enjoy short story collections and the absurd/horor/mystery genres, this is a good game. If you appreciate all of that, and are curious and patient enough, this is a beautiful game. This game is not for the trigger-happy thrill-seekers, but for the readers and writers and explorers, it's well beyond a feast. The fuel, supplies, terror, and time is always ticking away, while stories upon stories await out there as you make choices and progress through time and ports.
Combat becomes a result of the exploration, and is easily broken once you have a strong enough ship, but while that aspect can be exciting for a moment, it's not the focus of the game's designers and tends to feel natural in its own right.
This game is a stream of novels you can choose to write over and over and for which you can see so many different, unique and beautiful resolutions. If you are attracted to the page, the arts, the atmosphere of either, this game is your playground.
