A cautious recommendation

The good: Plot, lore, dialogue, voice-acting, music, RPG mechanics (finding equipment, levelling, buying/selling, combat, stealth), pathfinding, hotkeys for most things The bad: Ally AI, clunky interface, broken combo system, sound, tutorial that doesn't explain anything, short enemy sight/awareness, exploitable enemies and combat mechanics, keeping the summon from getting killed can be a pain The ugly: Graphics My opinion is that for those who can stomach a 17-year old game with its 17-year old outdated UI and game mechanics; there's definately a lot there for you - especially the in-game lore and writting; it's a lot better and more original than what you see in something like Pillars of Eternity nowadays. However it's flaws and age do show and can't be looked past, so I can't give it a higher score than what I gave it.

summoner after 11 years

just finished today my 3rd run of the game. beutifully crafted. i haven't completed all the quests. The game still left me will a want more feeling. Awesome story. Needed a decent sequel. RPG classic :)

FINALLY!

I've been waiting for this game for a while now. I'm not even going to wait for it to go on a bargain sale. I remember playing this game on ps2, it was a release title. This is a really great game. The graphics are crude and it probably won't blow you away but I really liked the story and the characters. I'm buying this game right after I write this. Solid game!

Great game

Came across this game some years ago at a gamers shop and i never regretted the purchase. the idea that health is permanently lowered is bogus as you can heal the damage. the summons are actually fairly strong and their power is based on how much exp the respective ring has - the higher the number the stronger the summon. the main story isnt the best but its by no means terrible. all in all i would recommend this to those looking for a medieval magic-fantasy story.

Nostalgia fueled, but well worth it!

OK, OK... A nostalgia fueled 5 Star rating. I know. But wow, this is epic level nostalgia. This game has extremely memorable characters, a great story and challenging (if you don't cheese and albeit clunky by modern standards) combat. Jekhar saying "I grow powerful" when he levels up is still forever burned in my memory. It still crosses my mind when I level up in other games. The music is fantastic and the graphics are dated of course, but very good for their time period. No modern quest marker GPS (BS) here, but people are worth talking to anyway and there's still guides on GameFAQS if you're desperate. Comparing to a more modern RPG in that regard wouldn't be fair, it's old school. Character customization is pretty good though and there's multiple ways to build up your party. And of course... SUMMONS! They actually become a 5th member of your party and are super fun to smite stuff with. I was sad when I upgraded my Windows way back when and could no longer play this game on my PC. Thank you GOG for putting it on here!!! $5.99 is a steal. To summarize: You like memorable story, characters, music? You like action RPGs? You don't mind older games? Then get this... Well worth it.
