Description

Classic Xbox Action RPG

Sudeki is a title from the original Xbox that has gained a cult following due to its colourful visuals, eccentric cast of characters, unintentionally hilarious voice acting and blend of action RPG combat and JRPG sensibilities. The games combat is the highlight, the game offering four party members divided into two combo-based melee characters and two ranged characters that play in first person. As well as bosses and quests that will test your ability to use each character. The games spell casting plays out like a turn-based JRPG, with the game slowing down to show off each characters most powerful abilities. Now that the game is free of archaic DRM that made the original PC release a pain to install and run on modern systems Sudeki is a game highly recommended to anyone looking for a console RPG experience. The only thing holding back the PC port this time is a lack of mouse driven menus. I'd highly recommend the use of a pad as it makes the game easier to navigate and even makes combat as the two melee party members feel more responsive.

Mindless Action RPG Greatness

I have fond memories of playing Sudeki on the original X-Box as a kid and remember it was a very fun time, so when i saw this pop up on GOG i just had to get it out of sheer nostalgia. While it's still a lot of fun, it does have a fair few issues that keep it from being a much greater game Pros: - Fluid and fun Combat System (3rd person Melee fighting and 1st person shooting and spell casting) - Includes 4 playable characters, each with different skills and move sets - Simple yet well done RPG Mechanics - Colorful environments - Solid PC port with enhanced A.I from the X-Box port - Some interesting quests - 40+ Hours of gameplay Cons: -Very poor Story - Laughable voice acting - Dated Graphics - Somewhat Linear level design -Hit or miss sound design With all of this in mind it's very hard to recommend, but i guess you just need to realise just what it is you're expecting from a game like this. If you're looking for a hidden RPG gem with in depth Role playing mechanics and a marvelous story, you're going to be VERY disappointed. However if you're like me and occasionally just want a simple yet unique Action RPG with fantastic and satisfying combat mechanics, good questing and progression with a story you can laugh at kept out of the way, then there really isn't much better on GOG right now then Sudeki. It was mindlessly fun then, and it's just as mindlessly fun now! 7/10 -

Solid ride, but that ending...

Sudeki is a very interesting title, especially for the Xbox platform, which was almost completely devoid of JRPGs. Like Anachronox or Septerra Core, Sudeki is an attempt by a western studio to make an RPG with a heavy Japanese style. Even as far as JRPGs go, Sudeki's combat is weird. The gameplay completely changes depending on which of the four playable characters you currently control in battle. Play as the swordsman, and you have a standard hack-n-slash brawler game. Play as the gunwielding scientist, and you're suddenly playing an FPS. It sounds odd on paper but works great in game, giving you countless ways to mix and match playstyles except for the few unfortunate segments where you're playing as a lone character. Sadly, if you play this kind of RPG for an enthralling story, you're better off with Anachronox. Sudeki's world is woefully bland and loaded with inconsistencies and some ugly art design. Main characters are mostly likeable, but the relationships between them are poorly developed. The story does pick up an interesting pace towards the end, only to abruptly halt on a half-assed moral. I'd recommend Sudeki to somebody who likes shooters and brawler games and can't decide between the two. To anybody else, this psuedo-JRPG will come off feeling like supermarket-brand cereal. It gets the job done, but is totally missing the charm and flavor the originals had.

Enjoyable, but shallow

Ah, Sudeki. I remember playing this on the original Xbox, and absolutely hating it. But, after replaying the whole thing (clocked in at about 19 hours. Finished everything but one side quest, and had some unnecessary backtracking that was my fault, and not the game forcing me to), I have to say I rather enjoyed my time with it. The graphics have surprisingly held up well. It has native widescreen support, and the launcher lets you set up higher res textures than it came with on the Xbox (and thank whatever gods you prefer, because Sudeki was hideous on the Xbox). The art style isn't bad, but it's not anything to write home about. The world and characters are colorful though, and I'll take that over drab browns and greys. Voice acting is pretty much all cheese, so it's not a work of art there either. Sudeki's music is... there. It doesn't really make you feel like you're on an epic quest, but it isn't so bad that you have to turn it off. Mostly inoffensive stuff. Wonderfully, the wired Xbox 360 controller works perfectly with Sudeki, so there's that (I played the whole game with mine). Story wise... It's kind of a mess, and the characterization isn't very good either. The characters themselves are kind of bland archetypes, and what depth they do get is mostly through exposition. Mechanically speaking, Sudeki is an action RPG with FPS elements. Two characters have combo melee fighting styles and are controlled in the 3rd person, and the other two basically have guns (Ailish has staff, technically) and are controlled from an FPS perspective. The stats are fairly simple, and the weapon and armor runes allow some customization. I highly recommend the Bat/Vampire runes for the health stealing effect, as it will curb some of the frustration in long fights with enemies who have bloated HP. Overall, it's kind of quirky, kind of linear (there are parts where you can go where you like), and worth a look if you want something that kind of feels like a JRPG, but isn't.

Slow start...

My experience is from playing this on the Xbox. Maybe it's just me, but I had trouble trying to get into it, trying to keep me interested. It holds all the elements of classic RPG's but it's internal pacing felt just a little slow (similar to Bard's Tale); It wasn't until certain abilities were unlocked 2-3 hours in that I really started to have fun. There are light puzzle elements, plenty of fighting. Certain puzzles/bosses were a pain, but beatable once you figure it out. The story I recall felt mediocre, but it's still pretty good. Only thing is you'll have the same annoying vendor the entire game (that damn duck!). I recommend getting and playing it, but afterwards it holds little replay value.
