Don't buy this. It only tells GOG they can sell broken games on their site. Yes, there is a fix generously provided by a member in the forums. But that's not the point. The point is GOG is supposed to have these games up and running when it launches on your OS.
Capcom had a bad era of porting console games to PC. Saturn/Playstation and PS2 ports were horrible. Tons of bugs, the games were poorly adapted to use keyboards. This happens with this game. Several graphic clitches, forced full screen with no Alt+Tab allowed, Most controller buttons are not recognised (Xbox 360 gamepad, thus the official for Windows) and if you expect to play using D-Pad...forget it, it's not recognised so it forces analog stick use. There are more but I'll go mad if I need to point them all so it's over.
This review is not only for SF Alpha 2, it can be applied to any Capcom port from that era. Onimusha 3 has the same problems, Resident Evil 4 too... Those games even come with the PS1/2 configuration and button names...to play with keyboard so good luck guessing what key is linked to the PS controller.
For your own sake please, avoid any Capcom port from that time. You'll waste your money and mental health.
Let me start by saying that this isn't entirely GOG's fault. They try to do their best with getting games to work. A lot of the noise in the forum and reviews here are a mixed bag - some people aren't having very many issues, while many people are having a lot of issues. Here is my experience though.
Street Fighter Alpha 2 is a damned good fighting game. However, the PC port sucks. It should only be bought as a pity present, along with maybe a flash drive with the arcade rom on it as an apology for the crappy game.
First of all, like many have said before me, you are going to want a controller that is compatable with the DInput API. This review was written up after playing a bit with the RetroBit Sega Saturn USB controller set into DInput mode. (Hold down Start for 5 seconds). Though, for easier access, ensure you have a Logitech F310. It's a solid Playstation style controller with a decent D-Pad and typical XInput buttons, but on the back, there's a switch to toggle the input mode.
My major gripe is that the graphics are the worst. I'd rather look at the DOS port of Street Fighter II, and that port is even worse than this. There is boatloads of screentearing and screenflickering in full-screen and the flickering persists when in windowed mode. Additionally, in windowed mode, there is a lot of color corruption that forces you to play it in full-screen.
Though, with a 720p TV connected up to the back of my gaming computer, this game looks terrific... if the screen tearing and flickering weren't an issue.
Whoever made this port should be tied up by Capcom with the remainder of Hi Tech Expressions for their 'ports' of the Megaman games for DOS and whoever programmed the US Gold DOS port of Street Fighter II.
Hello reader,
Not sure if you're reading this, but if you've ever encountered an issue with this game running at a correct speed, you need not fret anymore.
Since the latest installing of this game (dec, 2020) enabling the Direct Play feature in Windows 10 and possibly right clicking on the exe and setting it to run in compatibility mode for windows xp, I am able to get the game to run at what seems like the right game speed!
This game is the PC port of the popular Capcom arcade classic, Street Fighter Alpha 2 and while it might be a little rough around the edges (using compressed video cutscenes) beyond that, it plays very well while also being its own verision. A menu system accessable when pressing the Start button on game run (Enter by default) provides a settings screen which includes changing controls and graphics settings.
Fixed to work on modern Windows, I can't recommend enough for any street fighter fan.
This is the original Street Fighter Alpha 2 PC version and the thing about that is it is a port of the PlayStation version of the game with minor tweaks. It supports PC resolution and frame rates for example.
The problem that most people have with the PlayStation version is thae game was being worked on before the US arcade release was finished. The colors that later got used for Evil Ryu exist for example, but Evil Ryu was first added to the US Arcade version of the game, and does not exist in this version. Using classic Zangief and Dhalsim is also missing.
What you do have is the Chun-Li original outfit and the ability to play as Shin Akuma which is not possible in either the arcade version. Instead both things on top of some other extras would later get added to the Saturn version. While the Saturn version launched at the same time as the PlayStation version in the US, that is not true for Japan.
As to why the PlayStation version was ported to PC nearly two years later? Who honestly knows. As the later released Street Fighter Zero 2 Alpha had the content of both versions and got released in the US for PSOne and Saturn as Street Fighter Alpha 2 Gold and that includes Evil Ryu and other additions such as Cammy.
I have run into a few odd issues here and there, but this is a slightly suped up PlayStation version that makes it closer to the original Japanese arcade release. My only guess is they were also hoping to put Alpha 2 Gold on PC as well, but that is purely speculation. The PlayStation version was the The PlayStation version was also the one used for the SNES version.
Personally I still love Alpha 2. Despite the flaws this version does have, it is the closest mix of getting the PlayStation version with the look of the Arcade version. Would have prefered the Saturn version was ported, but that would require going back to 1996 and making that request and seeing what happens in 1998.
