WW II on a grand scale

I like Grand Strategy games. Sadly I'm not so good at them. But here comes Strategic Command WWII: World at war. The game is easy to play. You don't get bogged down by thousands of decisions about the economy, or what to research or organising supply lines, etc. It's all there but it is mostly under the hood. You concentrate on the war, fought on a gorgeous map and enjoy the big fights and the strategic decisions. You can play as one of the great powers from the axis of the allies or as all of them. You can even switch sides in the middle of the game. The pace is absolutely perfect and everything you do is logic and easy to understand. It has a 300 page long manual for those who want to delve deep into the mechanics of the game. But it isn't necessary. The modding scene adds greatly to the longevity of the game. The only thing that's missing is a tutorial game. But watching some of the videos on Youtube makes everything clear. And now: fight on, general!

Unwieldy

Just completed a three-months long play-thru as the Allies, victorious in the summer of 1946. The scale and scope(distance and time-wise) make this undertaking simply too tedious and laborious for one person, so we focused on the Pacific Theatre and let the AI handle the European Theatre. Having previously played SC: Europe as the Axis, the inclusion of that theatre a second time in this product seemed unnecessary and redundant. Far better, and more compact, would have been to release SC: Pacific as a companion to SC: Europe.

Great game. Poor choices.

I think Strategic Command is a great game. It's the most grand-strategy-esque wargame I have ever played. I love it. Everything is a bit simplistic, but it makes it easy to get into, and, with the depth of strategy in mind, difficult to master. This is 5/5 material. However it shares one big glaring issue with pretty much every other wargame on the market. The AI cheats SO MUCH. If boot up your first game and want to play on an even playing field with the AI in terms of not having the AI be given more units for free than you will ever manually produce yourself, you'll need to spend an hour turning of DOZENS of scripts that give free units ONLY to AI. PvP 1v1 this game is a 5/5 masterpiece. Vs AI? Well, thank god they allow you to turn off the AI's ability to cheat. But that doesn't change the fact that it's still there and it is ridiculous. I'd give it 1 star back if it had a "turn off all AI cheats" button when setting up a game. The amount of work to turn all that off is a huge time-waster.

Sadly not that good

This game is a descendant of "Commander-Europe at war" with a touch of "Panzer General", which are among my favourite games. But I don't enjoy playing it. Though there are many decisions to take, the game feels mostly railroaded. In Commander, you could build as many air and tank units as your oil production would support. And a lot of action in WW2 was about oil fields, like the Stalingrad operation by Germany in 1942 or the Japanese attack on modern day Brunei in 1941. As there is no oil in this game these attacks are almost pointless, and you can only build a limited amount of these units anyway. Another railroaded aspect is the Japanese engagement in China: Roads are so bad and chinese troops are so plentyfull that even playing on easiest I was unable to make any large scale progress there, which is historical correct but not real fun to play. There are some good aspects of this game too, like the map, the map-scrolling, the intuitive handling, and the naval AI, which is pretty good imho. But that is not enough to make the game fun for me.

Overpriced

Pros: The game concept is not bad. I love combination of turn based battles, strategic planning, and upgrading existing units with researched technologies. Player is not limited to playing scenarios, but mostly free to move whole armies and pick fights. It allows to slightly change history. I like concept of supply lines, it's like a whole new minigame of sumarine warfare. But... Cons: -Price of almost $40 is ridiculous. This is not original game, it's Panzer General on steroids. -Infantry units come in different sizes and I didn't really see much difference between army and corps. Worst thing is, if you produce cheaper corps, you can't later upgrade it to a larger unit. -Game forces you to transfer units across the map. It took me 6-7 turns to transfer units from France to Yugoslavia. Six turns of doing nothing but clicking one by one unit. You can only move the unit within it's range, instead of selecting destination and making units automatically move next turn. - Air units occupy the whole hex, they can't share hex with land units. Since air range is very limited (specially early in the game) they are not able to act far behind enemy lines if you keep them behind frontline, and if you put them on the front line they're either vulnerable to land attacks or they occupy hexes for land units. Also air units cannot act in bad weather, so if they are caught on the frontline during winter period they'll practically waste space and obstruct way for land units. Air cover should be additional benefit for land units, instead you must choose wheather to use land attacks or air attacks in same turn. Also, unit leveling is poor, I have lvl3 advanced fighters doing 2:1 ratio against Brittish lvl1 Hurricanes. Stukas rarely do more than 0:1 damage against infantry and often get shot while attacking even simple infantry units. Considering the damage air units inflict it is best not to use air units while attacking, use land units that inflict more damage instead.
