A solid entry in the Steamworld saga

I like how the developers of the Steamworld games continue to try out new genres while still taking place in the same universe. This time it's a deckbuilder, and it manage to have quite a lot of depth without drowning the players in different cards and options. Every hero have their own set of cards. There are cards that get stronger if you play them together with another characters cards, and if you play three cars from the same hero you will get a bonus attack, that sort of thing. You can also upgrade cards and buy new, and unless you grind a lot you will never get enough resources to upgrade everything, so you will have to make some choices. You also need to have 8 and only 8 cards of each hero in the deck, and you need both basic attacks and special cards so you can't just go with the most powerful attacks. You can't make drasticly different builds for each hero, one of them are definitly the support class with boosts and heals, one is the main meele, one is the wizard, you have some choices (do you want your wizard to focus on 1, 2 or 3 different elemental damages for example) but the core role will not change. The game have the same charm and silly humor from the previous entries and it will be worth your time if you like deckbuilders or the series in general.

Great RPG

Surprisingly great RPG. I loved pretty much everything about it: artstyle, music, UI, battle system, difficulty (the game is great on hard mode) and writing (loved the characters and the dialog). The game does have a few minor drawbacks though. Losing a party member usually means you either have to restart the game or revive them immediately, because otherwise you get stuck with a bunch of cards you can't use. But it's not a big deal. The best part about the combat is mix and matching party members using combos (which you absolutely need to do if you play hard mode). Theis leads to interesting combat situations like for example, Galeo is supposed to be your healer, and Copernica your wizard. But by using combos you can actually heal more effectively using Copernica after a certain point in the game (I'm talking about AoE heals, Galeo is still the best when it comes to status ailments and regen stuff) if you do a combo with Galeo in your party. Orik is also quite fun to use and he has easily the best combat animations in the game, I love it. The game lasted me for about ~30 hours or so (should be less if you play on normal, probably), which is honestly a positive. So many RPGs out there that stretch the play time with so much filler you don't even finish them in the end. My only complaint is honestly the final boss, I thought it was too easy compared to the challenge that was the rest of the game, it was a bit anticlimactic. But still, had a great time with it and hopefully there's a sequel (or some DLC) in the works.

Truly great game

I've finished "free" version, but enjoyed it so much I bought it on GOG, especially when it is 70% off - but really, this game is well worth full price. 1st, visuals. The feel-and-look is fairy/cartoonist, drawn astonishingly well. Characters are very nice to look at, and the same about locations. In short you just see the graphics is made by some true artists. 2nd, card part. Well, a scourge of card-based games, RNG, is offset here nicely by forcing 8 cards deck for all characters, and allowing each turn to replace up to 2 cards - this way very rarely happens you don't have any useful card to play. Also, there are quite many ways to create decks, though there is a little downside - characters whose join later gonna fall behind main ones level-wise (I had 8lv difference between my team and the rest). Not only that, there resources are so limited you just won't have enough money and materials to upgrade/unlock extra cards (by extra I mean these not in your main decks). I'm also not sure if you aren't forced to have one dedicated healer character. 3rd, gameplay and boss fight. It was so much fun I've played it 3 days in a row; it is very enjoyable when you start to see how your idea starts to work better and better. Boss fights were great, demanding, but not too overbearing - well, maybe except for the last one; at least on normal difficulty level. At some point you'll unlock access to arena where you can fight 5 quick matches, with a prize for 1st completion. 4th, user interface. Well, is a bit inconvenient to use solely by mouse, and checking description of the cards could be done definitely better. However, the game is so good it could be forgiven. 5th, music. Well, is nice, but "it is just there". I haven't noticed it till before last boss. 6th, story. Dialogs are humorous, however I felt there are a bit too much of them. The story itself has nice plot twist near the end. Overall, I can wholeheartedly recommend this game to people who like card games.

Un système qui fonctionne mais...

Comme toujours avec la série Steamworld, nous avons droit à des personnages avec des allures bien trouvées. Je pense notamment à Orik : le personnage le plus réussi de manière esthétique et en jouabilité. Cependant, les décors sont à mon avis pas assez travaillés : c'était l'occasion de faire du Steampunk. Après tout, l'univers s'y prête totalement ! Dommage ! L'histoire est pas terrible, trop enfantine et clichée. Je n'ai rien contre le fait de mettre de l'humour mais certains moments... Erf ! On entre dans la Stupidité avec un grand S ! Le système de combat est basé sur les cartes au tour par tour. Chaque personnage a le droit d'en avoir 8 et nous ne pouvons utiliser que 3 héros en même temps (jamais compris comment ça marchait ce genre de combine : les deux exclus vont s'assoir et regarder le combat ?). Ce qui au final, nous fait un deck de 24. Et là pour moi nous avons un problème : nous sommes trop limités. une limite de 10 cartes aurait été plus judicieuse en terme de possibilité et de stratégie. La musique est plutôt pas mal. Le fait qu'elle change au fil des chapitres est une bonne chose : nous avons ainsi de la variété. Les niveaux ne sont pas très grands, chacun est régie par une limite de niveaux. Je m'explique : mettons que la limite soit "15". Une fois que vos personnages ont atteint cette barre, les ennemis ne vous donneront que des miettes d'XP. Et là, j'ai un autre problème ; c'est typiquement le jeu où les combats sont plus gérables si vous farmez l'XP. Ici, pas question ! Le jeu est pas difficile mais quand même... Quelques niveaux supplémentaires font du bien. SteamWorld Quest : Hand of Gilgamech est sur le plan technique une réussite mais son scénario et ses personnages trop puéril par moment peuvent freiner certains joueurs désireux de vivre une aventure peut-être pas épique mais intéressante et bien racontée. Néanmoins, je conseille cet opus tout comme les autres de cette série : ils sont tous très bons !

A well made, hand crafted deck builder.

This is a fantastic experience. It has a pretty strong story wrapped around a fun deck building game, with some similarities to Slay the Spire. The deck creation process allows for many different play styles and combination plays, and having complete control helps to create cohesive strategies.
