STAR WARS™: X-Wing Special Edition

I spent an entire summer playing this on my old 386, I didn't even have a joystick I played it with my mouse and keyboard and I laughed pretty hard when my buddy who I used to compare scores with told me he broke his brothers 150 dollar flight stick playing this game. I wonder if I still have my old pilot data and if I can import it into this...also wonder if I could get this to work with a 360 controller. I can't wait to give it a try.

Thanks to the 1998 upgrade with better graphics. X-Wing purists might want to go for the 1993 version. Was able to use my old CH Flightstick with a 15pin Gameport from the 90s thanks to the Rockfire RM-203 USB adapter. Works just fine. Graphics has faded a bit, but playability is still pretty good.

I accomplished all of the missions included in the main game: Training, Historic & the 3 Tours of Duty, during summer '93 using the only means available (my mouse) in recurring composite motions in order to navigate, chase adversary ships or escape enemy fire. It allowed for greater precision toilsome as it was... but the full experience was very exhilarative.

I had the original '93 release when at uni. Spent many a long hour into the night, and 'twas the reason for many missed lectures and tutorials (though they sucked and I rarely attended them anyway). The 1998 version commits an unforgivable sin. FORCES you have a joystick. Surely, SURELY, it could have been configured to use keys and mouse? The 1993 version happily does so if you really ramp up mouse sensitivity to the extreme. I have never seen a game not even run due to "no joystick" before. Shame, as the 98 version looks so much better. The 93 version is just too lowres. You can't even see small craft until they are within 0.5km - and everything is just a jaggy blur. It gave me a migraine. It is also much harder than I recall. Tour 1 mission 3 and I'm stuck, I'm wiping out ALL TIE fighters and bombers and all the shuttles I am meant to protect still get wiped out. Even with the inbuilt cheats, I cannot do it, because those cheats don't cover NPC ships. So can't play the 98 version - but is a good excuse to get a joystick. The 93 version did not live up to it's own memories.

Spent literally hundred of hours on the X-Wing Series. Covering X-Wing, Tie Fighter, XvT and X- Wing Alliance. Fantastic story and gameplay. Why a modern verison of these hasnt been made yet boggles the mind. Sqaudrons was the closest I think we will get and that was just OK, Beatiful but ok
