Star Wars - X-Wing: Alliance

I love this game and it played fine with my old rig but, now that I have upgraded to a new PC that runs Windows 11, I get asked to insert the game disc in order to play. I found a workaround by just going to the file location and looking for and clicking on the XWA application at the very bottom of the page. Trouble is, by doing so, I bypass the feature that lets me calibrate my joystick. Please help, GOG. I kinda don't want to have to do all that when I want to play the game and I also want to be able to calibrate it properly.. Thanks.

We cried for it and GOG heard. Now they have delivered. For me the this was the best in the series and probably the best star wars flight sim to date. I never got right to the end when I originally played it. Something I intend to rectify this time around. The game has a great story and you take part in some uber battles against numerous capital ships. There is also a custom battle mode where you can set up a fight and fly numerous ships. I can still remember the adrenalin pumping through my veins as my x-wing squadron approached Vaders star destroyer. Now I can relive those days once again.

Ahhhhh TOTALLY GOODNESS

Where can i start with this jewel.... NO... A MASTERPIECE of space combat sim.... just a notch below Freespace 2, but it sure gives it a run for it's money, i used to play this game very feverishly, the graphics where top notch for the time, the late 90s so don't get dissapointed.... This game ROCKS, when i saw here on GOG... i told myself.... MUST HAVE, MUST OWN, MUST PLAY, ahhh the fond memories of this game, while it starts off slow... as the campaing progresses it becomes more challenging even in normal difficulty, whether it's a cargo run, assault, recon, rescue, siege defense, this game has it all from the 90s, did i mention the rocking STAR WARS soundtrack.... it sure get's the adrenaline pumping and the excitement flowing, Great Storyline, Graphics (for the time), STAR WARS Soundtrack, long campaing and you get to fly the "Fastest Hunk of Junk in the Galaxy" The Millenium Falcon.... what more can you ask for! .... WORD TO THE WISE... To play this game a FLIGHT STICK or GAMEPAD IS A MUST, otherwise the game won't load, this game is among the greatest investments that i've made gamewise, for you STAR WARS fans and and Space combat sim fans... THIS IS THE GAME TO GET... Besides FreeSpace 2, TRUST ME AND GIT THIS GAME LIKE NOW.

Fantastic - must have classic from 1999

Purchased the game when it originally launched in 1999, and words simply cannot describe the incredible job done by LucasArts. The storyline is engaging and keeps your attention, and, best of all, if you were familiar with the original DOS titles and X-Wing vs. TIE fighter, the controls did not change much. Unfortunately, X-Wing Alliance was the last space combat game of the series, and there has been no replacement to date. The GoG version is an outstanding reproduction which allows the game to run on modern systems, and the X-Wing Alliance Upgrade package is highly recommended for those with decent hardware. On older systems with older video cards (especially integrated solutions, such as the Intel 855 GM or Intel 915), you will need to remove the direct3D 11 files (ddraw.dll, ddraw.cfg, etc) from the game directory as the direct draw swap chain error will occur on hardware which does not support DX11. Make sure you have a joystick plugged in, or the launcher does nothing. I tested this version on a ThinkPad R50e (Intel 855GM), ThinkPad x41 Tablet (Intel 915GM) in Windows 7, and it worked perfectly.

Possibly the best Star Wars game ever.

Dear god, I haven't played this in ages. A friend of mine gave me his copy of it some years ago, and it was amazing. It has a good story (that doesn't involve Jedi - a rarity for Star Wars games), it has some really fantastic set pieces, the interface is well made and the game play has a lot of depth. In other words, classic Lucasarts. The graphics don't hold up particularly well (although some enterprising souls have made replacement models and skins for the ships, which greatly improve things), but this is an excellent space combat game that easily deserves to stand alongside the likes of Freespace 2 as being among the best in the genre.
