Into the Death Star

It's a trap! But seriously I played this back in 2001 after finding a boxed copy. I was running Windows 98SE back then. This game was such an amaaaazing experience with a Gravis joystick. What was esqually amazing about the game was how easy it was to replace the audio files with your own! I added audio pulled from the Star Wars THX video tapes and replaced the in-game sound FX and pilot chatter. The Millenium Falcon audio tracks were taken straight out of my VHS copy of 'Return of the Jedi' THX (Faces box set). It was awesome to hear Billie Dee Williams and Nien Numb as you flew through the Death Star and to hear Wedge Antilles saying he was already on his way out. I do not own 'X-Wing Alliance' on GOG yet (maybe now) but I can attest that this is one hell of a space flight game. The level with wave after wave of Tie-fighters is simply breathtaking.

Excellent.

GOG rules. This is the place to get all your favorite PC games - new & old. The X-Wing Alliance download was smooth & fast. The game was as I remembered from the late 90's & without disc, just double click the "Alliance" icon & play. The mods that have been developed by the Star Wars faithful / followers make an old game awesome.

Good and enjoyable.

I had this game once. I have nothing but good memories of it, despite not having been a Star Wars fan. Surely there are better looking options today, but X-Wing Alliance really sucks you into the epic conflict between the Rebels and the Empire.

Doesn't seem to work with Windows 11

I finally got to this game in my PC backlog, and all that happens when I open it is that it takes me to an installation screen asking me to Insert Disc 1. Not having a physical copy (or even a CD drive) this is the most "fun" I've gotten out of this game. Numerous requests for technical support on this matter have led nowhere with suggestions being either basic stuff I've already done (reinstall/make sure joystick is connected) to giving me links to YouTube videos and telling me to create artificial disc drives. Yeah, I'm not going to potentially mess up my system for a loading process issue on GOG's end. I'm probably going to just roll the dice and see if Steam's version actually works. If you run Windows 11 and buy this, be ready to ask for a rapid refund if it doesn't work. I'd give this 0 stars right now if I were able, as 1 star shows that the game has some basic functionality. I'll be more than glad to delete/update this review as soon as the issue is fixed.

Absolute Classic

There's nothing I can say that has not already been said about this game and the other X-Wing/Tie Fighter games. They are absolute classics that will never die. These games still have an active community of players and modders even today. If you dont already own it and you are a Star Wars fan or a fan of space shooters, then do yourself a favor and get it now.
