Nice visuals, great combat

One of the best Star Wars games! I can only recommend it! The Story, the gameplay, music, all pure Star Wars! If you experiencing crashes, or the game won't load, here is the FIX! It's helped for me: 1. Go to %LOCALAPPDATA%AspyrStar Wars The Force Unleashed 2. Edit Config.xml 3. Change <s id="ClothLevel">0</s> to <s id="ClothLevel">1</s> 4. Save your changes. The game now runs with cloth physics activated. No more crashes since I have done this... The game works fine with Xbox360 Controller! May the Force be with You!

Solid game, bad port.

Star Wars - The Force Unleashed has you play the role of Vader's secret apprentice, hunting rebels and Jedi down throughout the galaxy. While it sounds amazing, and in parts it is, this game has a number of issues resulting from being a console port: 30 FPS cap, clunky control scheme, and notoriously poor optimisation at launch (thankfully, this last point is not relevant on modern hardware). While there are still some very questionable design choices in this game (the Star Destroyer level comes to mind, as well as the Jedi mind trick section in the Jedi Temple DLC), for the most part, the game does a good job at making you feel like a powerful badass, destroying everything in your wake. The biggest pity about the story is the fact that it is no longer canon - although how much this matters to the average player is open to debate. Recommended to Star Wars fans and those with some patience to get it working properly.

God of (Star) War(s)

The reviews here are kind of strange. One is critical of it for not being an RPG and another talking about how the lightsabers aren't lethal enough... okay? The Force Unleashed is a third person hack n' slash that fills a similar niche to the God of Wars or Devil May Crys out there, though never hitting at their level. It's a fun, hilariously OTT power fantasy that injects the subtleties of the force with PCP and lets you rain wonderful destruction down on a variety of Star Wars themed opponents. While the general moment to moment action is fun, it isn't perfect. It's mechanically shallow and there are some tedious moments in the game, particularly with regards to certain bosses. A highlight at the time of the release was the euphoria engine that would allow hapless troopers and the environment to react in a believable way to your crazy force antics. The first time you see a stormtrooper grab onto another stormtrooper in an attempt to stop you from blowing them away is one of the joys you get to experience with the engine. While only a visual gimmick it does enhance the spectacle during chaotic scenarios. Story-wise it's serviceable but not particularly memorable. Ultimately it's just backdrop, justifying a variety of new locations and themed enemies for the carnage. The protagonist isn't very likeable, drawing too much from the mopiness and angst of the prequels. His entire persona is anathema next to the all the fun carnage. Supporting characters are more interesting though. All in all the game is fun but forgettable, worth playing if you are looking for some action with the trappings of Star Wars but not if you're looking for some lore rich foray into the Star Wars mythos. It's no Jedi Knight or Knights of the OId Republic, but it has its place. I would dock a point for the port quality (it's not good), but 2 stars would feel harsh so I give it 3 stars with caveats.

The last good Star Wars game to date

The Force Unleashed is a hack-n-slash game in the vein of God of War. While the story is just okay (and non-canon anyway), it's the gameplay and graphics that matter. At the time of its release, TFU was simply beautiful and in many ways, it still holds up, with the visuals being sleek and stylish. The sound design is also pretty stellar, with good voice work and nice music. The gameplay is pretty much what you'd want from a Star Wars hack-n-slash game, it's pure wish fulfillment. You get to swing your lightsaber at rebels and stormtroopers alike and perform some really nifty Force moves - and boy, do those still the show. The Jedi are at their most over-the-top overpowered in this game and it's glorious - you'll be throwing TIE fighters around with your mind like there's no tomorrow. The Ultimate Sith Edition also includes three additional levels, one taking place during the story of the base game and two being an alternate what-if continuation of the Dark Side ending. They are pretty nice and allow you to visit iconic Star Wars locales. As for the cons - the PC port has some poor optimization (which is now a non-issue anyway since the hardware is much more powerful) and some questionable control choices (irrelevant if you have a controller). To this day The Force Unleashed remains the last time LucasArts put enough money and effort into a Star Wars game and remains the last truly good Star Wars video game.

A good game

This game is basically a new version of the previous games in the series of Star Wars games where you have a character in an action game with light RPG elements (upgrade paths). Nothing new in that regard. Some people say it is lighter, others not, it doesn't really matter as an RPG it isn't. That's not a bad thing as far as I am concerned, as long as you know what you are getting. A mostly linear action story & gameplay, set in the Star Wars universe. No one is rediscovering the wheel here. I played the game years ago almost to completion and found it a solid Star Wars game. If you are not nitpicking and if you find it at a good price, you will enjoy it. I never had any problem with the controls or the game crashing. Having said that, I played the game on Vista. I do not own Windows 10 and don't plan to, so I don't know how it runs on that. The game is not easy, with parts of it having to use powers to pass enemies. Most of the difficulty is at a reasonable level, with some spikes here and there. Nothing too bad. The reason I give this game a 3/5 and not say 4, is because while "there is nothing wrong with it", it's also not memorable at all, to me. I seriously can't remember more than a couple of parts of the game. Worth buying and playing. It's above average, it's not great.
