Game only runs in a tiny window, and as soon as I used an item, my character lost the ability to move.

Overrated by nostalgia
Was this a good game 20 years ago? Most likely. Is this game worths to buy and play in 2023? No, not really. For start, you need to make a few preparations to make it work, like changing your graphic card settings so you don't get stuck in place after every battle, or use 3rd party tools like Flawless Widescreen to reach a non-distorted resolution. After these two you only need to deal with the frequent crashes both ingame and during launch (I dropped the game when I could only start it normally after 8 tries, jut so it crash when I wanted to save the game). But technical issues aside (you can run it on an old PC or emulator with no issues after all), I still couldn't recommend the game. Objective reasons: the gameplay itself is really outdated. It uses an RPG ruleset similar to D&D 3rd edition, and the battles are basicallyclick on the enemy to attack, then sit and watch until you've rolled enough succes on the dice for it to die. Sometimes use medkits, shields, jedi powers. The conrols between are clunky, like you need to be at a precise distance and angle with the camera to see the lootable containers/remains or diffuse mines. The environment is really barren and ugly, this was very common in early 3D games but ages like milk. Subjective reasons: people say that the game gets better after leaving Taris. For me it was quite the opposite: Taris had interesing plotlines, well-designed environments, and was a true Star Wars setting. After Taris you are forced (pun intended) to turn into a Jedi which is the most boring part of the whole SW universe, but here its even more lacklusting: you need to hit a big wold with horns 43 times with a lightsaber to defeat it. I felt weaker after getting my lightsaber and jedi training than being a simple soldier with 2 vibroblades or blasters. There are really good parts in the game, the side stories and quests are interesting, I loved the Taris quests and setting, but constantly felt bored after that. Could use a remake.

Way, WAY Overhyped
I've actually played through most of the first one and a chunk of the second one. I do like the star wars franchise but most of their games are weak at best. I really don't understand the fascination with this game or the reviews.. Graphics, story, combat, script / characters and level design are all average at best. I cant help but feel most of the reviews are paid reviews or just sock puppet accounts, but then it's highly rated on Metacritic too. I just don't see the fascination myself..

Aged Poorly
I played KotOR for the first time, in 2010. I had extremely high expectations because everyone who talked about the game, spoke about it as though it could cure cancer and mend a broken heart. Never before has a game so thoroughly disappointed me. Obviously an old game is not going to have the most impressive graphics but what struck me most was how dated the gameplay felt. The light and dark side choices were cartoonish (one of the early choices gives you the option of giving money to a homeless person, or killing them in cold blood. Very subtle). The combat was just plain boring. It had all the fun of an old hotkey mmorpg, but with none of the social interaction. By the time I got the advanced flurry ability, I just have to spam that and would easily win every fight. I didn't realize you had to compulsively talk to every character in your party in order for them to have any development at all, and as a result my entire party was just a bunch of strangers throughout the whole game. The story is just...okay. There's a twist about 3/4 through the game that most people found to be Earth shattering, but I didn't find it particularly surprising at all. Aside from that, the plot of the game feels like something from someone's fan fiction. Dialog was also a letdown. Many conversations seemed like they could only go a couple of ways but you had multiple dialog options, so I would often talk to someone, choose a dialog option hear their response, go back, pick a different dialog option, and hear the exact same response. I know I'm shitting all over this game but I really do seem why many people liked it. For it's time, I'm sure it was revolutionary, but everything it did well, has by now been done better, by a hundred different games. If you never played KotOR before, just try not to buy too much in to the hype
