One blast from destruction, the U.S.S. Voyager is mysteriously transported into a hull space infested with danger. As part of Voyager's elite Hazard Team, you must defend it from a host of scavenging aliens, then infiltrate a Borg Cube and derelict vessels to eradicate your deadly foes. The Quake III Arena™ engine powers the dynamic gameplay as you fight for survival through 40 ultra-intense single-player missions and 16 multiplayer arenas. It's first-person shooter action that won't quit. But, be prepared-if Voyager is destroyed, humanity won't be far behind...
Fight along side crewmembers with the additional of Icarus AI, an enhancement to the Quake III Arena™ engine that allows for extraordinary team interaction.
Nine weapons-each with two firing modes-gives you eighteen different attack options. That means the firepower will be there when you need it most.
Multiplayer modes offer Free-for-All, Capture the Flag and breathless Team play.
Corridors collapse, walls explode, and enemies materialize right in front of you.
Includes the Star Trek™: Voyager - Elite Force Expansion Pack.
The only reason I am not buying this today is that I have quite few games in my que and can afford to wait to see if it goes on sale. I have the original and I remember it being awesome. I just didn't want to try to go through the pain of getting it work on a modern machine. GOG does it again!
I though this was a great Star Trek experience that felt just like an episode on Voyager. Plot could be right out of Season 6 or 7, all voice actors did a good job and were true to character, the dialogue was delivered in a natural and believable fashion, and there were tons of lovely references to other events, locations or people in the Star Trek universe. The majority of the level design felt suitably alien and was obviously made by people who love Star Trek.
However, I don't think this makes for a great FPS... mainly due to using the Quake III engine. You either move too slow or too fast (walk/run), you're asked to do quite a bit of stealth as well as precision platforming and the engine just cannot deliver here. I assume because of technical limitations, environmental lighting and shadows are also really quite poor and do the level design a disservice. Didn't help my immersion! Enemy AI is primitive and mostly amounts to rushing the player in waves. Klingon Honor Guard could do both things better and that one came out in 1998, but it had the Unreal 1 engine. Makes all the difference.
I also felt that the overall quality of the level design degraded towards the end of the campaign, which is a relatively short affair (about six hours if you don't rush things). Same looking corridors with bland lighting and textures, moving from elevator to elevator with little in between, that sort of thing. An elevator ride means you have to wait for your squad to move onto the pad, slowly, one guy at a time. You don't have to worry about issuing orders to your team mates in Elite Force and they do offer some fire support, but you'll be doing the brunt of the fighting and the enemies tend to focus on you and only you. And yes, they do get in your way sometimes. Boss fights and weapon selection were nothing to write home about either.
Loved EF for the atmosphere and nostalgia, but I don't think it has aged very gracefully when it comes to being a good FPS.
After waiting patiently for Final Fantasy IV to release today, I see Elite Force I and II are now available? I haven't been able to get either of these games to run very well in years so here's to hoping this works!
Built on the Quake 3 engine, this game was smooth, quick to pick up, and just a dream to play. I was one of the original league participants back in the day. Raven out did themselves with this game. Theres never been anything like it since. If anything the last 25 years of video games have been down hill.
Thanks to all of the Raven developers who put this wonderful game together. You guys created something that built a lifetime of memories for a lot of players in the early 2000s. Very well done.
If you are a Star Trek fan, or a shooter fan, this is a must try. Even 25 years later, it's amazing.
