Highly Recommended

I had this game when it first came out and GOG has faithfully recreated it to play on Win10. You have six races to choose from with each race having unique weapons and ships. The only common thread between them is phasers. The mission range from very easy to very hard and you can also adjust how hard the AI will be from easy to extra hard. If you join the special groups the missions become hard rather rapidly and folow a story otherwise you just engage in random battles. Each battle grants you experience and points. You use the points to change/ipgrade your crew/resupply your ship. Some missions give few points others much more. The higher your rank the more points and the harder the missions. I enjoy these one more than the ones whiched followed which I also have on CDs but they won';t work on Win10. When upgrading your ship you have to be careful because your crew doesn't follow you so you might lose your legendary one. The game is a computerized version of the baord game of the same name and uses some races you might never heard of before as two of the ones you can choose but they exist extensively in the board games along with the Ziniti which only appeared once in the cartoon Star Trek series., Very additive but paln as much as a hour per battle since they can get very involved.

Actually works great on my Win10

I've played half of the Hydran campaign and all of the Lyran one (the special missions), so happy that those worked without a hitch. So far, the game has only crashed once on me. I can't guarantee that it'd work for everyone, but I'm very happy to play these special missions again for the first time in more than a decade! This is not a review on SFC1 itself. If you haven't played SFC at all before, I would recommend SFC2 or SFC2:Orion Pirates over this one, as both have better QOL improvements, gameplay, polishing, and balancing for the *vanilla missions*. But -- SFC1 has the better story campaign missions, and for that reason, I am happy to pay 10 bucks for it again after all these years. I only had to go into the config exe once to set the resolution a bit higher and then the game worked just fine.

Crash!

Lovely game but does not work on my Windows 10 - fix needed by GOG before they sell it to modern computers.

Never been annoyed by a game so quick

I'm stuck in the first tutorial mission. I'm supposed to destroy some freighters, but I don't deal any damage no matter how often I hit them. I only hit randomly, without having any idea why it worked out. The game gives absolutely no feedback on what I've done wrong or how it is done right. Tried approaching from different angles, getting in closer range, using differnt weapons, overload mode - nothing worked. In my opinion that's just poor game design. Must be the first game in 20 years that managed to already annoy me in the tutorial so much, that I uninstalled it.

Different style of game

Many others have talked about how to get this game to work in Win10. The scenarios seem a little repetitive at first, but the same scenario played out with three frigates per side is very different from two heavy cruisers per side. Some nuisances: * Battles in the campaign are always balanced, so upgrading your ship can actually make the scenario much harder, or even nearly impossible because of a quirk of your new vessel * The idea of the federation always using missles feels wrong to me. * Some factions have no light cruiser class vessel, which, when planning a scenario, can create some wild imbalances I had some of the most fun planning scenarios with a mixture of light cruisers and frigates, supported by one heavy cruiser. Watching frigates that you think are too weak to cause serious damage get behind a heavy cruiser with weak rear-firing arcs and stay there because they can manuver so well can really ruin a day. Some of the races are a little more bug prone than others. I felt the Hydrans were a bit overbalanced, especially compared to the Lyrans. Klingons, because of their missles, are a even more overpowered, especially in the late era. But overall, an enjoyable game -- if you can get it to work.
