It's a buggy mess
But it's got nothing to do with the GOG version. I still have my CD copy of this game, and while it is a significant improvement over the first Armada on paper, it has always had problems. Unlike some other users I have had no issues with running the GOG copy, but my CD copy crashes on launch, so that's a plus. -As some others have pointed out the units will often either fail to follow your commands or ignore them and do something else entirely -Units are easily baited into chasing after enemies at warp even when you set their movement autonomy and alert status to the lowest setting and there is no hold order -The AI is very basic and will usually just throw suicidal waves of ships at your ships -The units build faster than units in Star Craft but they're all glass cannons that get one-shot by the next class up. Once you can start cranking out battleships that's all you will make because even a fleet of 16 of anything less will get wiped out in a few seconds. The ships need to be tanky for the special weapons to matter. -While the first Armada had some differences between the factions Armada 2 gives each faction the same number and kind of ships with the only outliers being the Borg (kinda) and Species 8472. -Some of the new ships are only really useful in campaign missions, and several of the new special weapons and ships are redundant. -Ships get stuck on terrain. In Space. One thing that I really did like about this is that it tried to portray space as 3D. That's a big problem with a lot of space games, including another of my Trek favorites, the SFC series. There is the foundation of a good game in here, but it feels like it was rushed out the door by Mad Doc without the necessary polish, and because of that it's frequently frustrating to play. One more thing: I have seen one review say there is no "sandbox mode", just the campaign. Not true. Instant Action let's you play against AI opponents on all of the multiplayer maps. It's just that the AI is basic.
