The player takes on the role of Sam Fisher, an operative for the National Security Agency's sub agency, the Third Echelon. The Third Echelon consists of many Splinter Cells. It has the support and resources of the major U.S. intelligence agencies, but will never be recognised by the U.S. government. If any cell of Third Echelon is captured or compromised the government will disavow any knowledge of its existence and the remaining members will vanish.
Fisher is inducted into the Third Echelon with an important first mission. Two CIA agents have disappeared in T'Bilisi, Georgia after investigating communications blackouts in the area. Fisher will uncover more than a couple of corpses when he infiltrates the Georgian government and unveils a threat that will have devastating consequences for the American people.
Splinter Cell is a stealth-oriented action game set in a Tom Clancy-inspired landscape. All kinds of cool high-tech gadgets are at your disposal to help you neutralise terrorist threats. Night vision, thermal vision, EM sensors, sticky cams, and other whiz-bang tech toys help you spot the bad guys, and your broad array of weapons--lethal and not--include suppressed pistols and assault rifles, sticky shock bombs, Ring-Airfoil Projectiles, and the most lethal weapon of all: Sam Fisher himself. Climb, mantle, and sneak your way through a game that won E3 2002’s “Best Action/Adventure Game” award as well as the Game Developer’s Choice Award for Excellent in Writing. With a tightly-written plot, unbeatable mechanics, and an iconic character, it’s no wonder this is the start of a long--and excellent--series.
Includes Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell®: Mission Pack with three additional missions: the original Kola Cell mission, Vselka Infiltration, and Vselka Submarine.
Go Behind the Headlines into the real world of modern espionage.
Diverse mission objectives achievable by different means for increased replay value.
Highly interactive environments giving players more gameplay options and the ability suit their actions to their preferred gameplay style.
The core of splinter cell is quite nice, the movement offered is fun if a bit clunky and the gadgets provided to you are a great way to allow you to tackle a situation in the manner you choose.
The problem is, you'll very, very rarely make use of any movement out of your own volition, as the game is terribly linear.
It's basically a long corridor, no room has any alternate entrance, and even though Sam can run, jump, and climb freely there's nowhere to climb to, nothing to explore.
To add insult to injury the game forces you into combat on 2 occasions, at which points the game devolves into sitting in a corner and popping the heads of incoming enemies, who have a tendency to gain nightvision when alerted.
The game feels like a huge waste of potential, were it not so linear it could have been great.
The end result is just mediocre.
I wouldnt recommend this game. I love stealth games and I really wanted to like this game, but I just couldn't/ As other people have already covered the mechanics are decent but the level design is very linear and consequently doesn't provide much of a challenge and isnt rewarding to crack. Go play thief or hitman instead.
The akward platforming and the extreme linearity of each level broke me mentally. I thought i knew something about stealth games, i mean ive played thief and all the deus ex games, recently ive also played intravenous each i liked quite a bit. i thought i was prepared for this game but i was wrong.
The maps are so designed in such tight, linear fashion that i often found myself wondering what was i really supposed to do and really the only thing you need to know to beat this game is the right moment to strike. This is more of a game that tests how pacient you are as oppose to how smart you are. You know in pretty much all the other games that i mentioned the maps are really complex in terms of their design. You need to be vegilant and look for possible path ways that can lead you to where you're supposed to go and obviously you also need be smart when it comes to utilising your tools.
None of that existes in this game. You sit in dark corner, shot a couple of camaras/lights out maybe toss around an object to grab the enemies attention and you try to grab them from behind, that's the whole game. It's nauseatingly repatitive and mindless, again you just need to know the right time of when you're supposed to engage.
And for a stealth game, i found that brute forcing your way with combat to be quite efficient mostly because the a.i is just stupid and when you're not forced to not be lethal it's just better to shot your way through. It may not be the most satisfying shooting experince but it's way less furstrating.
There's also a fair bit of trial and error in this game which for game that severely underdelivers on the stealth aspect just made my brain melt to the point i had it running down my nose and ears. Honestly, i don't understand what made this game popular. Sam fishing might be a cool character but i reckon that's about the only genuinely possitive aspect i can say that this thing has.
