The physics are very good, the RPG touch with looting dead soldiers and destroyed tanks makes the tactical approach very interesting. Also salvaging disabled tanks makes the tactical approach very interesting. You can salvage the damaged enemy armor and use it against them, or salvage fuel for your armor or vehicles. Destructible environment and realistic shell ballistics makes it today a great game. I highly recommend the rest of the series: Faces of War, Men of War, Men of War 2, Men of War Assault Squad, Men of War Condemned Heroes and Men of War Vietnam. I think the best of the series i think is the Faces of War.
I have no clue how I came across this game back in 2004, but ten years later, it's still easily in my top 5 all time favorites.
Where to begin? Its replay value is unlike any other. I've played the introductory Russian mission so many times, it's ridiculous, but still fun and challenging. Your crew becomes family, one loss can make you restart the mission. Taking that small crew on foot and setting up an ambush on a tank or platoon is truly nerve racking; but a successful attack brings an unparalleled sense of accomplishment. You're always the underdog up against impossible odds, and one wrong move can alert the entire enemy force to your location. Every move must be well thought out. Every shot must count. Running out of ammunition will force you to try your hand at your enemy's weapons, including their armor. Attacking their tanks enough to kill or scatter its crew while leaving it repairable takes practice. Every mission is a challenge, and there are countless ways to attack. Playing each mission several times is the only way to discover all the possibilities.
Any strategy or war enthusiast will almost certainly enjoy countless hours with this game. Lights down low, headphones up, you'll be completely engrossed in this game from the very beginning. Get it, love it, and pass it on!!
Also, there was a sequel called Faces of War (in North America). For those who love this game, it's worth checking out if you can find it. Slightly different game play, but still worth a shot.
SO glad I can play it again! The original never worked past XP due to a graphical error that made one mission impassable.
Imagine this:
"You are a paratrooper on the American Side of WW2. You watch as most of your squad is shot down by enemy German anti-air guns. You are armed only with a knife and a few matches. Luckily one of your surviving squad members landed in the same forest as you a few yards away who managed to scavenge a a Thompson Machine Gun from a nearby paratrooper corpse. As Germans search the area you are in you hide in a bush and throw a knife into an enemy unit, causing him to fall on his knees as blood gushes out of his mouth. You pick up his Mauzer and hide again. After you regroup with your other squad member, you both exchange a few matches and head to the nearby grain field. One of you sets the bottom part of the field on fire and the other picks off the remaining Germans that aren't turned into burnt corpses. A moment later a truck with a mounted machine gun and 5 more troops comes into the area. What do you do!?"
This game is full of these moments. What makes this game unique is the amazing gameplay, visuals, physics, and destructibility. You can literally steal an enemy transport, run it through a nearby wall and unload your troops into an empty, well fortified trench near bye. You can loot the field for weapons, ammo, whatever and use it to your advantage. Lets say you have a Molotov. DO you throw it into a house or the extremely close bye tank that may blow up and land on the house, crushing everyone in it? The games AI is well programmed. Enemies will look for cover, find choke points, and even turn your own cover against you as it comes collapsing down on you. This game is almost flawless.
The cons to having direct control of an individual unit/vehicle, destructible buildings and environment fauna, and big maps is the unforgiving difficulty. This is by no means a casual friendly game. I have some problems even though I am quite the strategist. I had to at one point take a pic of the map, and decide my route in the area. Heck, you only get maybe 6 men at the most! So by all means, if you think you can own this game, go ahead. But don't day I didn't warn you.
Have fun!
Ok, so, for $6, this is certainly a yes. As other, very detailed reviews have mentioned, Soldiers offers a sort of unique experience. I say "sort of", because it's actually an entry in the expansive Men of War series, which features a ton of similar to identical games. The experience they offer is certainly pretty unique, however.
The problem is that the coolest parts of the game are also often it's biggest downfalls, something shared across the entire series. Because you can engage in so much micro, you HAVE to engage in a great deal of mirco to really do well. It makes the RTS aspect sort of weak, because you generally will get the best results using one very closely managed guy at a time rather than actual squad tactics. Similarly, the sort of RPG aspects become kind of irrelevant - you don't need to worry about arming the squad, all that's important is that whichever guy you're using at the time has the proper gun and enough ammo.
You *can* play the games as intended, but for most of them, particularly once automatic weapons become involved, it makes them just about impossibly difficult or tedious.
There are enough people who absolutely love these games out there that I'm confident not everyone shares that issue. The only other potential troubles would be the occasional bug. As with most 1C games, there are a couple, though I don't recall anything super game breaking anywhere in the series.
So yeah, for $6, if you want to play a real-time squad based tactics game that will play like a very novel isometric/third-person-ish shooter, it's hard not to recommend this (or any title in the series). That's a great deal.
If you want an actual squad based tactic game, there's better ones out there - 1C has a few in their catalog themselves (though I'm not sure their on GoG). If you want a decent turn based game (more my thing, personally) in a similar style and from the same era, the Silent Storm series is worth looking at and around the same price.
One of my all time favourites too!
And the parent of a series of similar titles like Faces of War, Men of War etc.
Most has been already said in all those reviews.
Its not casual, it needs your time. But then you re in heaven (or hell...of war to be more precise):
Very interactive with all items scattered around, and with the matrix-like bullet mode like in Max Payne.
Where else can you repair a tank, jump in and out of it, choose tank ammo type, and burn a whole field of grain down to cause mayhem and chaos...?
Quelque chose n'a pas fonctionné correctement. Essayez de rafraichir la page.
This game is waiting for a review. Take the first shot!
