all the 5-star reviews must be from nostalgic old-timers. i understand that. however… sin wanted to bring something new to the stage back in 1998, but there arrives half-life. and even those who liked sin for it's animation-like graphics got deus ex in a couple of years, which delivered in tons what sin never had. look for RookUK comment ("Deservedly forgotten") for more. don't buy it for $9,99 unless you know what you are doing ;-) add it to wishlist and wayt for a discount if you absolutely must have it, and in the meantime grab yourself some of 2004-ish shooters here for half the price.
SiN is a fun, occasionally frustrating action FPS. Best enjoyed by fans of over-the-top '90s shooters like Duke3D, Shadow Warrior etc. You know, those games that have a trash-talking hero, are super violent and don't take themselves too seriously. You play John Blade - a sort of supercop who must save the world from.. Evil corperation... human experiments.. blah blah. The plot is nothing special and the voice-acting, weak. Gameplay is where it shines due in large part to body part hit-detection system. You have armour for your various body parts; if your chest plate is damaged, maybe best to avoid blowing the next enemy to bits with a shotgun. Instead, you could go for his legs or how about a nice headshot? - Then, when you loot his corpse, that armour you needed will be perfectly preserved to patch yourself up with. This adds a nice layer of strategy. Moreover, leg-shots slow them down, arm-shots can cause them to drop their weapon. Beware; same applies to you regarding arm-shots. Built on a modified Quake Engine, the environments, though generic (factory, warehouse, Dam etc.) look good for the time, with colourful lighting, and destructible scenery - this impresses even now and can even change the level layout. Characters look a bit pointy but their gory death animations are very entertaining! Pacing is good and the gunplay, very tight. The soundtrack grates a little after a while and the overall sound is a bit unbalanced, i.e, ambient machinery sound far too loud compared to the - not quite beefy enough - weapon sounds. The weapons themselves are great though, ranging from magnums, through shotguns to crawling spider mines, an awesome sniper rifle, a chaingun that doubles as a grenade launcher.. in the end unlocking some more exotic sci-fi weapons. All very satisfying to use! While the level design is mostly good, the uneven mission design and uneven difficulty often frustrate with some nasty ambushes and trial and error moments. Optional vehicles are weak. 8/10
One of the bad quake engine games, and it has aged like milk.
- Bad movement
- Bad platforming
- Instant-reaction hit scanners in the first level even on normal difficulty - the nanosecond you enter their field of view, BAM, you're hit.
- Auto-reload after switching weapons (whoever thought of this needs to have their head examined)
- Circular main menu with no mouse input, so you have to keep guessing which way the arrow keys move around the menu
Just go play Quake II.
This I only picked up as a result of some review by a gamer on YouTube stating it is an incredible game for it's era/time of release, but I must say this one is not aging well at all it's more a polygonic semi Goldeneye esque game it's no Goldeneye though it's something standalone and unique, but it is far from good by todays standards it's just too dated at this point to really give it a good score although it likely was once a great game when it wasn't so outdated.
But using it now on modern PC hardware and mapping via the Steam Input gamepad mapper it's just not a good experience at all it is far to fast in it's in-game motion for a mapped gamepad to replace a keyboard and mouse even when the turning speed when aiming (look via right thumbstick) is lowered to zero sensitivity for the mouse view it still moves way way to quickly like a mouse over a thumbstick, it's playable and it all works but it's not a good feel or easy game speed to play this way. It's really a game for pure original input aka controlling is best made via mouse and keyboard not a gamepad eing mapped as a mouse or keyboard.
This aside it's fast hard hitting action packed gameplay but it's got no feeling of depth or charactert's overshadowed by it's dated aesthetics prodominantly and it feels like an 8th of the level of quality of say Goldeneye, however if it were to ever be fully remade from top to bottom as in to be fully recreated from scratch hen this would absolutely blow your minds, but as it stands it's a very dated feeling game. But I'll keep it regardless and will have another go at it again some day if I can get use to keyboard and mouse gaming? At that point this might feel a far superior experience to mapping gamepads as a replacement for the keyboard and mouse which simply feels awful.
Regardless of the controls n this game it offers absolutely none stop action from minute one and that never seems to relent either so in that respect it's highly stacked with action from the get go, and will appeal to action and arcade action game fans of the classic arcade games era. To me I feel it has a mildly time crisis feel in there in a way with a splash of Goldeneye and some funny dialogue, the weapons and fighting portions will feel much older than the afformentioned to many though which will be an aqcuired aste for many.
If done right today as a recreation it could be magic but as it stands it would require some magic to feel visually and mechanically relevent now. Maybe if they HD remaster it and add additional full gamepad support natively t may redeem it for another decade if you did that right but it really would be better to be completely rebuilt from scratch on this one it could be spectacular done right.
