This game had the bad luck of coming out a bit buggy and on par with Half-Life... Rendering it overlooked by many people. Running the Quake2 engine, it features localized damage skins for the enemies, good hitboxes, dynamic soundtrack, belivable environments, awesome arsenal, tongue-in-cheek cheesy b-series acting and plot, clever puzzles, interacting with computer in a way yet to be done again... A must for FPS lovers.
This thing is finally on GOG, don't miss it! It is one of those obscure-yet-actually-good FPS. It's your everyday shooter; start, get keys, kill everything that stands in your way and get to the end point. Don't forget to save!
Why should you buy the game? First of all, the story is much more than a simple comic book plot; in fact, it's got even more plot than Half-Life. You are this hardcore guy, and along with your witty sidekick you must battle your way through the city of Freeport to stop the drug menace. It's full of humor too! The voice acting in the game fits the comic book tone of the game and provide entertaining conversations between the characters. Some levels have multiple branching path that may lead to a different level while some may start you off at a different point in the next level. You have all sorts of weapons at your disposal including but not limited to a shotgun, machine gun and a heavy weapon. The enemies in this game are pretty challenging despite the supposedly simple 1998 A.I. The music in the game is calm when you're required to infiltrate but fast-paced when you need to kill 'em all. The levels take place at various parts of the big city. The only thing that sucks about this game is that it's unfortunately buggy; the result of rushing the game to compete with Half-Life.
All in all, buy it. It's a SiN not to play this. You are guaranteed with at least 10 hours of sinful first-person shooting action; an experienced not to be missed!
Ah SiN. It was supposed to be the next Duke Nukem, with extensive voiceover and interactivity and some badass combat. And the game delivers - in the first level at least.
Unfortunately, the game really peaks at the first level, the huge bank stage. There's a lot less interactivity and varying paths in the later levels, set in boring places like sewers, city buildings and a lab. It's too bad, because the game does so much well and was in some cases ahead of its time. The sound design is great, the weapons are cool, there's one of the first instances of location based damage and some stealth elements.
SiN was positioned as the start of a franchise - even an animated movie was released; the game's ending leaves room for a sequel, but it never received a proper follow-up. It didn't help that Half-Life captivated everyone like a month later while Ritual worked out their game's technical problems with a series of patches.
Despite all the disappointment, SiN is still a decent shooter worth playing. It wasn't the revolutionary title it could've been, but it's still a fine FPS.
... like one of the creators said some time ago.
Awesome game, good weapons, good design, good enviroment interaction....
One of the Best FPS ever... and nobody buy it.
Sin is a good example of a yee-haw shooter. It wants you to have fun. The pacing, the weapons, the look and sound of it all give you this over-the-top action vibe that is just great.
As for what it brings that is unique to the FPS genre, this game had a very cool idea: creating levels that were not just large and action-packed, but allowed for variation in the structure of the game. For example, you can take wholly alternative levels through the game based on things you do in particular levels. Destroy a device and the next level will be flooded with lava. Figure out a password and you'll find out you have to head for a military base under attack.
The one thing I am not a fan of from the game was the late-game sections that start including monsters versus the firefights you got before. A game with a similar tonal shift would be the first Far Cry, if you're familiar with it.
This and Half-Life were two major FPS releases of 1998. They both tried novel ideas, but while Half-Life got deserved praise, Sin was held back by the initially unpatched release, with its long load times (the topic of the first Penny Arcade comic ever published online, by the way) and general bugginess. The issues were eventually fixed, but not before it had been largely dismissed in favor of Half-Life.
Give it a try this time around - this is one of the better FPS releases from GOG.
