Description

A Unique Cult Classic.

I'm trying not to candy-coat this game, and the review is meant for first-time players. When Silver came out, it was very dividing. While reviewers were lukewarm, fans immediately gave it a cult following. It does a lot of cool things, like good voice acting, tense atmosphere, great art design, and some interesting real-time combat mechanics. Unfortunately, some people may be turned off by the lame story, lack of guidance from the game, and weird difficulty decisions. The plot is simple faire: The evil king Silver has stolen all of the women for himself, and the player character David must gather a party to rescue his wife, the rest of the women, and defeat Silver. The plot is lame, and the writing is flat and uninteresting. This is not to say the narrative is ultimately bad, though. There is good story-telling here, but it mostly comes from things like character interaction, and the wonderfully-designed levels and great art style. Ally characters are not especially well-written, but they're likable and distinguishable enough in combat that you'll quickly develop favorites and tailor your parties thusly to take into the dungeons. Speaking of dungeons, each level and section of the game is vibrant and atmospheric, and each dungeon is more fun than the last. Getting to these is sometimes frustrating, though. See, although Silver is a linear tale, exploration is mostly non-linear, meaning you can go pretty much anywhere from a certain point, but you're sometimes never given an indication of where to actually go. This creates frustrating instances in first playthroughs where you're literally just wandering the world map trying to find the one screen where a scripted event will trigger, or where a previously-blocked path will now be open. I still remember message boards full of people just raging because they didn't know how to open the gate in the castle basement, because you needed a ranged character to lock onto and hit a hidden switch next to the gate. The gameplay itself is fun. As you go around picking up new allies, each of them has their own special niche such as melee weapons, magic, hand-to-hand, bows, etc. Fighting is done real time in a hack-and-slash manner, and while the combat system takes a bit of acclimation to get used to (sort of like a streamlined Resident Evil but with more options), it's ultimately well-designed and serves well with the rest of the game. You can take control of each character individually, which is welcome because they're not particularly bright, and do not prioritize their targets well. If I could give one hint though, always take a ranged unit with you. You absolutely need them to solve some puzzles, and there are nasty enemies that can only be taken out with arrows/magic/thrown weapons. This game is hard, as well. There are no real villages, and only one screen with stores, and absolutely no inns, so you have to make due with all of the healing items that you have, and drops are inconsistent. Sometimes, you'll get a bunch of potions and food in a row, but then can go a whole dungeon without any substantial consumable items. Just remember to grind where you can, and take all optional side-quests to get extra items and more characters. The game may be difficult, but it gives the tools necessary to overcome it if you are patient. Overall, Silver has some flaws, but what it does well makes it worth playing. Its atmosphere and gameplay make it fun to play, but its lack of direction will frustrate first-time players. There's some interesting stuff here, but you have to be dedicated in order to get to it all.

I can't believe it is finally here

After seeing Outcast on here it reminded me of a lost classic I played a while back called Silver. I was horrendously bad at it to begin with, and gave up around the time I was fighting an acid dragon. Recently, I reinstalled the game and came back to this, using someone else's savegame to pass the now impossible "bell-timing puzzle" and found the rest of the game to be an epic adventure with amazing music, a fantastic story with brilliantly done dialogue, and tough as nails boss battles that make you want to curse at the screen, but give you that amazing sense of achievement when you finally beat them (HA! TOOK ME ONLY 10 YEARS FUGE!) Hopefully GOG have fixed the bell puzzle, as I remember that being impossible to do due to a programming error which never scaled the timer to the speed of the processor. Its a must buy, and I loved every minute of it.

Most glorious moments of my childhood

Ah yes, Silver. When it first came out, I was so very excited. A big, hardcover box... and two discs. That's quite something, right there. Silver delivers a great story with, for its time, impressive narrative. The characters are (overall) fully voice acted with voices that fit the characters like a glove. The story is easy to follow, but with enough twists that it doesn't get dull or unimaginative. The combat mechanics are also quite ingenious for its era; granted, higher ranked weapons are generally better, but the combat system makes them different. Combat is delivered through the mouse; different motions makes your character respectively chop, slash, stab or deliver (cooldown-based) special attacks. Different weapons are best used in different ways; axes and hammers are great for chopping (hammering) or slashing, but thrusts are for obvious reasons near-useless. Swords are decent for chopping and slashing, but do massive damage when used in thrusting attacks. Additionally, at least some enemies are more susceptible to different kinds of attacks, making it an enjoyable (but not tedious) challenge to find the best combination versus different opponents (take my word for it; hammers don't do much against treants). There are basic weapons, magic weapons and magic spells (orbs) that all have different modes of attack. They're unlocked at a steady pace throughout the game, leaving you with an ever-growing arsenal of weaponry. The environments and scenery is great for its time; there are many beautifully drawn vistas. But most importantly, what you come to enjoy most in Silver, is the music score. Personally, I would vote it among the top three best scores through gaming history; the soundtracks are diverse and very evocative of different emotions; they are excellent for conveying both calm, distress, sadness and exaltation. All in all, Silver is a great story that, while it suffers from somewhat aged graphics, still delivers a wonderful narrative with great environments, memorable characters and most of all, a soundtrack that has you walking on clouds. An overly generous review? You might think so; I say to you, buy it and try it for yourself, and then come tell me I was wrong. Because, in all fairness, ladies and gentlemen... you wont.

Still Glittering !!!

So a month after listing silver in the requested game, I couldn't stop myself buying it as soon as it comes out. And playing it briefly, it brings back all the best memories I had the first time I play this game. Why I love Silver: - the story is not about prepubescent boy trying to save the world, its about a guy trying to save his wife. Realistic! Simplistic! - the game mechanics is simple. The control are wonderful. Not just clicking away at enemies, you can do many special moves useful in the battle. CTRL + mouse gesture to do those moves. - surprisingly, the graphics looks good. Cute blocky 3D character on top of pre-rendered background. It never looks dated because it doesn't try to hard to model lifelike actors. - The GUI does not clutter. The pop-up radial menu may need to get use to, but you'll appreciate the screen estate that this game gives you. The game is simple to learn, but hard to master. But it certainly going to entertain you. Highly recommended.

That F ing bell

I love this game so much, and ofc bought it the second gog put it up :) i only wish the game could be tweaked such that the bell puzzle from hell could work better on new faster comps compered to the ones from 1999 .. The bell puzzle in rain is a real big problem .. having the ability to slow the game somewhat during this would make it much easier :) other than that this game is pure gold.. but that bell man.. that damn bell
