An Excellent Remake With A Few Flaws
I absolutely had my doubts with Konami bringing back Silent Hill appearing to be a cash grab attempting to capitalise on the massive success of the Silent Hill Remakes. But Bloober Team managed to excellently capture the original's spirit, while remixing and refining it. The atmosphere is great, and the complete lack of loading screens and diagetic map make for a much more seamless and immersive experience. The acting isn't quite perfect, but all in all I would they range from as good as the originals to miles better. James' actor in particular does a spectacular job bringing so much more emotion and believability to the character. This is only aided by mocap and modern technologies allowing for subtlety in facial expressions. On the gameplay side it's also great. The combat is much more difficult than the original, especially on higher difficulties, making enemies more of a genuine threat and heightening the dread of running into them. Resources are also adequately scarce, and you'll quickly run out of ammo or healing items if you don't get good at the melee combat. The puzzles aren't watered down either, and individual puzzle and combat difficulties are retained. Now on the flaws, melee combat while improved still has some room to be better. The dodge is generous with i-frames and rather spammable, and the combat overall feels a bit more action-y than it maybe should be. There's also too much focus on the combat, with you not really being able to run in a lot of scenarios and making the game feel a bit padded out. The other is that the game is horribly optimized, and it barely got any updates to improve it. I also think the game is a bit overpriced considering it's not particularly long, but if you think you'll be doing multiple playthroughs or can get it on sale it's absolutely worth it. I'd give it a 4.5, but GOG doesn't allow that. Bloober nailed it and I can't wait to see what they do with a remake of the first Silent Hill, which we now know is coming.

Atmosphère horrifique réussi
Il ne brille pas particulièrement par son gameplay mais offre une atmosphère horrifique soigné grâce à son sound-design stressant et une direction artistique angoissante, le brouillard dissimulant des bruits étranges audibles mais non reconnaissables et flippantes font de Silent Hill un paysage marquant et glauque. Critique écrite après 2h40 de jeu, ma note pourrait varier en fonction du scénario et du level-design du titre.

It's no replacement. It's its own thing.
Why this is a great remake? Because it exists on it's own plane. Like a paralel else world. I can tell this was made by fans that have the same love and respect for this franchise that I do. People that grew up with it. Just like me. I think the remake of 1 and even 3 & 4 are in safe hands.

Great Horror game with a few flaws
The game has a great gameplay and a great story. This game made me feel on edge many times while playing it. The combat is fluid and many of the puzzles were fun. The characters were very interesting. The game has some flaws that prevents it from being perfect. The biggest flaws are that the game's beginning is slow, and many areas of the game are too dark too see, even with the flashlight.
