Shameless and lacking.
Quite simply put, this is not a Baldur's Gate-level product and doesn't deserve the name. The writing is hackneyed and jarring, and doesn't have even a hint of the brilliance that BG1 or BG2 ooze from every pore. The characters have been devolved from "interesting people with multitudes of facets" to "one-dimensional punchline/stereotype". The plot is blindingly stupid when really, it should have written itself: it takes place shortly after BG1 where you're basically clearing out the last of the bad guy's forces. Instead of this growing into a rising political crescendo, you almost immediately end up getting visions from Force ghosts, having the story of BG1 rehashed and fed to you again, and culminates in an ending so monumentally stupid it beggars belief. In fairness, five bucks on sale isn't a terrible price, so if you want to gawk at it to see how bad the damage is as if you were driving to work and saw a motorcycle accident, this isn't a bad price point for it. But I really assure you that you will walk away unsatisfied on every single level.

Closer to IWD that BG
I have impression that story lacks depth and works as excuse for slashing more and more of the enemies. Difficulty level is balanced really well though. Big plus for how random encounters were made. Very big minus for what happens with party members equipment when saved game from BG is imported to SOD.

Underrated
I feel like people are determined to hate on this. The writing is variable in its quality unfortunately, and some of the voice acting could use improvement, but I'm still having a blast playing through it. The encounters and environments are better designed than many in the original games, with Beamdog managing to get some great things out of the Infinity Engine with regards to numbers of people on screen and graphical fidelity. Whilst some writing has been dissapointing, other writing is spot on and has capturing the spirit of the classical characters fantastically well in some hilarious moments. Overall it's definitely not as good as the original two games, but it does get a much worse rating than it deserves.

Not as bad as you've likely heard
Now this games isn't worth a five star review but is is well about the one's and two's it's been getting. Now this is an expansion in the same way as Throne of Bhall. It is liniar and controlled telling you a story and it is a story that solid and has moments that really drew me in. It manages to present you with some actual consequenses of your heritage and make it feel like an actual thing that you are a child of Bhaal in the sidequests as well as in the mainquest which i didn't feel at all in the sidequests of BG:I and II. That doesn't mean it is better, there is some taint of someone in BeamDog trying to give their specific political spice. Just don't speak to the npc cleric about their name and the rest of the characters are actually quite ok. The story ties in ok with the rest of the BG story but there are no consequences of your choices in the later games and your choices from the previous doesn't matter either which sucks. It has made me look forward what they can do with Fearûn in future titles when they aren't tied to a story they didn't make themselves.
