Extremely good - but Civ4 is better
Sorry for a very short review. A decade ago it would have been much longer, and much more gushingly, ravingly positive. I can't do that anymore, unfortunately. Make no mistake, this is one of the best strategy games of all time. It is extremely engaging on so many levels, has depth, challenge, huge replayability... But ever since Civ4 came out, Civ3 has become obsolete. Like a Swordsman when the first Knights show up. There really isn't any added value in playing Civ3 over Civ4, unless you do so for nostalgia reasons. Civ4 is available here as well, so... sorry, Civ3, you used to be the girl of my dreams, but this way hotter lady has been living on my block for several years now, and we've been hanging out A LOT, and you know how it goes... it's nothing personal. We can still be friends.

Through the echo of time...
in the beginning, the Earth was without form, and void. But the sun shone upon the sleeping Earth and the deep inside the brittle crust massive forces waited to be unleashed. The seas parted and great continents were formed. The continents shifted, mountains arose. Earthquakes spawned massive tidal waves. Volcanoes erupted and spewed forth fiery lava and charged the atmosphere with strange gases. Into this swirling maelstrom of Fire and Air and Water the first stirrings of Life appeared: tiny organisms, cells and amoeba, clinging to tiny sheltered habitats. But the seeds of Life grew, and strengthened, and spread, and diversified, and prospered, and soon every continent and climate teemed with Life. And with Life came instinct, and specialization, natural selection, Reptiles, Dinosaurs, and Mammals and finally there evolved a species known as Man and there appeared the first faint glimmers of Intelligence. The fruits of Intelligence were many: fire, tools, and weapons, the hunt, the farming, and sharing of food, the family, the village, and the tribe. Now it requiered but one more ingredient: a great Leader! to unite the quarreling tribes to harness the power of the land, to build a legacy that would stand the test of time: a CIVILIZATION!

Yeahhhhh, no
Move on, nothing to see here. AI is not balanced yet. I hear IV onwards is worth our time, maybe I'll check them out. It's so tantalising, it NEARLY works... oh well.

There's something odd about Civ III....
It's from that weird time in gaming history during the early 2000's where game developers thought "no one will every want to play this in a window, fullscreen all the way baby" That's it, my only complaint, there is no windowed mode, but 'tis a big one, as I'm confined to a laptop with no second monitor for the next forseeable future, and I need to be able to do other stuff during the day. Civ I (DosBox), II (Test of Time patched), IV (GoG) and V (steam) all have proper "windowed-mode" options While you can hack this into a "not totally fullscreen" mode, you can't move or minimize the windows I know this probably isn't something GoG can or would fix, it's not built into the game, it was a feature of the previous game but was deliberately removed for this game by its developers, which strikes me as "odd" for lack of a more polite term
