The Tondon Limes by Sherlock Holeums.

To avoid beating around the bush with this review, it is unfortunate that I can only describe ‘Sherlock Holmes - Secret of the Silver Earring’ as falling short in every capacity. The execution is weak, the pacing is off and the voice acting mediocre at best. This is without the horror of the confusing pixel hunts, terrible characterisation and atrocious interface. Yet there maybe one or two moments which are worth five minutes of your time as a diehard adventure game player. And that is whom I only recommend this game to; those who literally are scraping the bottom of the barrel. I wouldn’t call myself an expert, but if you draw Sherlock Holmes up against even average titles from The Adventure Game Company, it pales in comparison. To go into greater detail, I’m going to use the ‘puzzles’ as examples. That is to say, I am using the term very loosely as this game contains two in total, all the rest are spot-the-item or use-this-with-this. It is a weak mechanic to expect the player to see a single pixel on the screen, and the selectable area of it being the size of a mouse cursor. This is exacerbated by the total lack of inventory item description. Holmes does not describe what you are holding when prompted and all the information goes into a badly organised, bloated inventory book where every conversation and object is listed. The means of clicking through these lists is laborious and dull and to make matters worse you are forced to use it to answer ‘quiz’ questions at intervals. These ‘quizzes’ remind me of tests a mean-spirited teacher would set a class who they felt were not paying enough attention in their lesson. As if the game knows of its own tedious nature, it forces you to trawl through old dialogue and apply different plot elements to ‘yes’ ‘no’ questions. Get them wrong and you cannot proceed and further. Realistically, to retain the thread of the story is so hard as it’s exceptionally easy to lose interest at any point. Sherlock Holmes - Secret of the Silver Earring drags you through its short and frustrating gaming experiences by proving long and easy to watch cut-scenes as breakers. This is literally its one saving grace, as they provide the content and interest you’d want from an adventure game. Unfortunately it just feels like ‘game’ sections of this story gets in the way of what would be a rather good forty minute Machinima. The last frustration is the interface and camera angles. The point of view often flips with an odd jarring sense which makes you lose your position and get confused as to the layout of the location you are in. Exits are often hidden simply because you’re not close enough to the edge of the screen, and Holmes or Watson sometimes do not even react to your instruction to move. This is coupled with jerking animations and sometimes even glitched visuals. If there is one last thing which might convince you to avoid this game, unless you simply cannot resist, is one of the main characters calls Sherlock Holmes ‘Hole-ums’ by overtly pronouncing the ‘l’ in his name. Speaking of the letter ‘l’, ‘The London Times’ within this game is called ‘The Limes’ - I kid you not. It is hilarious and terrible all at the same time. Avoid.

Underrated gem

Back in 2003, this game was my opening door into the adventure game genre. Before, my poor soul was stuck only on mindless fps. This game is not perfect, far from it, but it has a significant appeal to me. The story is great, here a small recap: Secret of the Silver Earring takes you to England in 1897, where Holmes attends a gala hosted by an industry magnate, Sir Melvyn Bromsby. Bromsby is celebrating the return of his daughter, Lavinia, from school abroad, as well as her 18th birthday. Just as Bromsby takes the stage to deliver an address to the assembled businessmen, army officers, and ladies, a shot rings out. Bromsby falls dead instantly. As the startled throng rushes for the exits, Lavinia is left looking like the prime suspect. This game is your usual point and click adventure game, with many puzzles and ton of pixels hunt (especially at the beginning). At the end of each chapter, you answer a small quiz, which is a nice touch in my opinion, to highlight the important aspect of the investigation. The graphic are nice. Static background help this game to pass the time. These backgrounds just look georgous and are varied. Characters looks stiff, but hey nothing can be perfect. You can see that the game graphics have been heavily influenced by the 1980-90 Granada tv series. The game has almost 1 hour of cinematic and these are well done too. The sound director used simple chamber musics songs, but they actually fit the theme. Tchaikovsky "Souvenir d'un lieu cher op 42" is the main theme. The voice actors are really great. They all went with a 19th century London accent that only add to the immersion. Both Sherlock Holmes and Watson voice actors have been reused through the entire Frogware Sherlock Holmes series to my great pleasure. Unlike many "eastern" (German, russian...) games, the dialogue is perfectly fine. Value: around 10hours if you use a walkthrough, 20 hours without one. At 10$, I would pass, but if it gets a 50% deal, go ahead! You will not regret it.

Too many timing "puzzles"

I'm a big fan of point and clicks, but this did too many things wrong to be fun. The real time puzzles of avoiding the guard and trying to wind your way through the forest really killed it for me. With the perspective constantly changing and no compass you could never be sure where you were with the forest, so I gave up there. Uninstalled, unlikely to ever finish.

A real Sherlock game

This is a real Sherlock game. At the beginning there is a lot of pixel hunting, which indeed reflects the observation of a crime scene. Collecting clues may be frustrating for some, especially when one realises to have missed a small piece of evidence in a very crowded screen. On the other hand clues are really visible on screen, so if one is a careful observer things do not become too frustrating. The real essence of the game is however the deduction part. At the end of each day there is a set of questions to answer on the basis of the evidence collected. These questions are fundamental to the game, since they force you to analyse what you discovered so far. My only concern on this part is that one has to change the replies until they are all correct. This procedure may be a bit frustrating. My girlfriend and I adopted the following strategy. If we did not manage to reply all questions correctly, we repeated the process up to a maximum of 4-5 times. If we did not get it after so many times, we then loooked at the walkthrough. The end of the game is also a pure Sherlock-moment, since one has the chance to gather all elements together, reconstruct what happened and guess the culprit. It is very difficult, but come on this is Sherlock Holmes! All elements for a correct deduction are there, but one has to think carefully on all details. Finally, a comment on graphics, music and acting. They are all very good, and the game has aged very well. The game is very atmospheric and I strongly suggest it for the long winter nights.

Love Sherlock Holmes, but not this

Ugh. Playing this game felt like I was slogging through a chore. Grating music, a insipid story and being quizzed to progress were the death knell for me. You heard me- quizzes. Don't buy it. Find a better adventure game. Or even a better Sherlock Holmes adventure game.
