The world ended on the day the bombs fell. Since then, it’s always been like this: disease, hunger, death. The ruling Aristocrats — a faceless oligarchy that controls all resources — have unchallenged authority. There’s never enough food, water, or vaccine to go around. The rich receive regular doses of vaccinations in exchange for their unconditional government support. The poor live in fear, superstition, and squalor until they die.
Amy Wellard, a young woman reluctantly working for the government to qualify for the vaccine lottery, believes there’s a cure — and she’s going to find it. Even if it costs her her life.

The main problem is how political the game is. It feels like a half baked revolutionary tale with some gender theory and other SJW-things sprinkled over it. It's not extreme in any sense but sometimes peeps out and does some harm to the story, atmosphere and believability. Example quotes "Strong women make the best leaders" and "I'm going out for fresh air" (by the father, as his wife is giving birth and is in a very bad situation, needing help). Other times, people are excused for things such as stealing and bullying as they are poor. There are many small things like this but they never dominate completely. Many won't even notice. As a swede I've become kind of allergic to SJW stuff like this. Others not constantly bombarded may find it less annoying.
None the less the game isn't that great, even if I'd agreed with the philosophy.
The character design is the worst of the wadjeteye games I've played. Just looks ridiculous with these wigged french revolution era inspired guards and politicians. Makes no sense. People are not stupid. They don't need things to be that obvious to get that there are some parallels.
Puzzles are the easiest in any of the wadjeteye's I've played, by a fair margin. It was kind of nice to for once play one of their games without getting stuck but overall I prefer the puzzles to be more difficult.
The music is good. The game is varied. The design overall, besides from half of the characters, is great. Good length. Lots of extras for those who likes commentary tracks etc (I think there were 3 different commentary tracks, by designer, musicians, director etc). I liked the way you skip between screens.
It gets a 3/5 for being a fun game. It would have been a solid 3 had the game been less political. Now it's a rather weak 3. 6 hours playtime. Worth it on a sale.
As a first trial of a point'n'click this is prob. one of the best to start with, I only got stuck around 3 hours into it and needed to find some solutions to not get frustrated. (one of the ones needed I was sure I already did which is why I got stuck on it)
After that, once I got more used to putting more info out of every conversation into my mind and focused more the rest of the game was a lot easier.
What to say about it, nice story spiced with a bit of humour, nice graphics that suit the game and it's style very well, voice-acting was more than well enough done, I personally enjoyed the game a whole lot. (which is why I bought Primordia which is a harder game for a n00b like me but it also has a whole lot more LOL moments)
This is a classic point and click, with all that tends to entail: that means retro pixel graphics, an interesting if slow story, and puzzles that well either leave you saying "okay I thought of that... just not like... THAT" or "okay I NEVER would have thought of that". If you don't mind either long sessions of head-scratching or short sessions with a walk-through, the art, story, and music here are totally worth it. I don't think I liked this as much as Primordia, Technobabylon, or the Blackwell games - but it's still one of my favorite in the genre and one that I'm very glad I played.
Whether you will like Shardlight or not greatly depends on how invested you will get into the characters and their fate. The puzzles are OK but nothing to write home about and there are no innovative game mechanics either. Just plain old point and click stuff. For me the characters and setting made up for the bland gameplay but this might not be the case for everyone. I was interested in the setting and I have received exactly what I was expecting. It is a bleak post-apocalyptic world, but there is still some order in place since there is government(aristocracy) which upholds the law although the law itself is not particularly a fair one . The main protagonist Amy is a great character, not because she has some extraordinary trait, but because she is a normal and relatable person. Amy is just trying to survive and while doing so she accidentally gets involved in a political power struggle which is way over her head. The rest of the characters vary from likeable down to earth people to cynical upper-class members and blood thirsty revolutionaries, all of them invoked a certain emotional reaction. It can be a great game if you find the characters and the plot interesting, otherwise it can be a bit of a dull experience.
