A decent game but do not expect book 2 at all this game is dead.. The devs comment all over steam that its been in a law suit and it may be years if ever at all it gets out of court.. again.. there is no book 2 it ends on a cliff hanger and thats it
Keeping this game on the store is a borderline scam.
This is a literally a unfinished version of Heretic kingdoms awakening, theres no reason watsowever to buy this game.
Everybody says to just buy Awakening instead which while it's true that this only has like 60% of the campaign in it, I actually prefer the gameplay in this rather than Awakening. Resembles the original Inquisition more and I also found it more tactical with manually aimed skillshots and many more RPG elements and skills.
It also has crisper graphics (IMO) and includes a short but very important story prologue, without which, you miss out on some important context, especially if you are coming from Inquisition like I did. This prologue got cut from the game in Awakening for whatever reason.
As for gameplay, a lot got changed in Awakening and usually for the worse. Most of the gearing system got changed and simplified, crafting got removed etc. Some area layouts got changed, music in some areas also got swapped. You have one more active skill slot here than in Awakening, making it much more comfortable to play (only 3 in Awakening is very restricting). Dungeons are much darker and have better atmopshere. There is a day/night cycle, blood coming out of enemies when you hit them and more.
The problem here is the price tag. If it got cut by at least half (since you are paying for 2/3 of the game at best, it would be appropriate) and the sale price would reach 7 or 8 dollars, then it could be viable as a look into what the game originally looked like. As I said, I prefer the mechanics and gameplay in this one rather than Awakening but as it's incomplete and will never be finished, it is hard to recommend. Still, I squeezed one playthrough out of this even after playing through Awakening twice.
Compared to the first title, Inquisition, this game has less roleplaying and is more linear. The "shadow world" mechanic is about as shallow as it was last time around. Dialog and plot interaction is not as good or deep as in the first, and the "mysterious hooded dude" shtick seems disappointingly straight-faced, and you're stuck interacting him at every plot point for... at least two chapters, maybe more. Definitely a step or two down.
The optimization in this game is indeed bad. Sometimes I can't tell whether I'm actually CCed, lagging, or if the game's movement control is a little buggy. I don't have a top-notch computer, but other games of similar graphic quality run smoother and without instilling doubt. Control is slightly better overall than in Inquisition, but it still feels a little clunky. Spells are mostly skillshots and seem to behave well, but trying to move your character, not failing to move, and not knowing why kind of sucks. And yes, as mentioned elsewhere, load screens are a bit long. Additionally, backtracking to waypoints to heal manually is a bit of a chore and weirdly antiquated, as well.
Crafting as of March 2015 is a total craps shoot. You occasionally can find what you need to upgrade what you want, but usually not, and the only store in town that sells Leather stores one or maybe three of them, when you need 8-20 per recipe - same with Bronze, etc. Empty vials are in a similar place, so you end up crafting a few of your favorite potions and using crafting to make Weak Healing Herbs 99.5% of the time. You can't queue up a stack of them to craft all at once, either.
The upside is a tag team battle system. The Devourer initially absorbs a character of your choice and acquires a varied collection of additional PCs throughout the game, highly varied in species and combat role. You choose three to bring along at a time, allowing for cooldown juggling antics and passive regen swap-outs. Definitely worth it on sale at the least.
Garbage. This has to be the WORST game I have played in over a decade.
Running into other quests that cannot be completed because devs didn't get around to it. AFTER running around in circles in-game with no indication that this is the case.
Brick puzzles requiring precise character movement when the programmed mouse movement is anything but. Frequently in battle I find my character just standing there, unresponsive to attacking (not sure if I am being chronic stunned through most battles as there is nothing to indicate this has happened, just unresponsive character). Nope, the fighting in this game (even with Shift pressed) is horrid and unresponsive. At some points, the only way to do any damage at all is to just WAIT for the specials cooldown and use them again. WTH? Also, love it when hitting a special and he makes the grunt noise like he was completing the action but does absolutely nothing until you hit the special button again.
Plans/blueprints at merchants indicate in no way what mats will be required, nor which party character will benefit from their purchase.
Healing does not stop draining soul essence when health is full.
Also enjoyed having an NPC interrupt my looting and push me through a door that closes behind me, leaving the loot on the other side.
In Hidden Fortress numerous pieces of loot are "stuck" and cannot be picked up (even with auto-loot enabled). Every SINGLE time an item of blue value drops it cannot be picked up. Even tried kiting the mobs to different areas of the map. Saving and reloading still leave loot broken.
Continue from the main menu doesn't load the latest save. Large numbers of inventory have no image placeholder, so completely blank spots are actually filled. Having crafting ingredients in the accessories and gems listing when they are actually necessary. Sell something to a merchant by accident? You can buy it back, but at 10x the price you were paid for it, so wth is the point of even having a buyback tab? Just add the junk to a merchant's inventory for crying out loud.
item tags while Auto-toggle is activated still fade or never show up. Not sure what auto-attack actually does because it in no way assists fighting. demon/puppets still stand around with their thumb up their collective butts.
Crafting menu has absolutely no organization. Not by alpha, character use, damage amt, armor amt, etc.
Also forgot to mention random crashes to desktop as Kult3d quits working.
So much of this game was poorly thought out and horribly executed.
