Must have!

Since i joined GOG in early 2014 i was annoyed. A list of games NOT on this site annoyed me. This List is: Soldier of Fortune Shadow Ops Rainbow Six Rogue Spear Project IGI With SoF from the list we now get another gem from the golden Era of "Modern Warfare games before Modern Warfare was a thing" Every time a CoD Kid or a wanna be YT channel tells me how CoD 4 invented the Modern Warfare genre i come up with a sophisticated laughter and lecture them which games did that in the early 2000s. So which games did that? Project IGI, Operation Flashpoint, DFBHD, Soldier of Fortune 1 and 2, Ghost Recon 1 and 2, Black aaaaaaaaaaand of course Shadow Ops. And here we are. Finally that (sadly unknown) Action Shooter arrived on Gog. I played it back then in 2004 on the X Box (that version comes with oversensitive controls) and in 2007 i got the PC Version. What is Shadow Ops? It is a fast paced action Shooter in a Modern Warfare Special Forces setting. It comes with all the stuff from its time: Medikits, Crazy Action, a Michael Bay storyline and an unforgiven difficulty. GOG Version and how it aged. The Cutscene look like total trash filmed with a potato (but i dont care, thats how it is with such old games). The visuals are 2004 and still look ok. The controls are spot on and it still plays smooth and fast. Why should you buy it. 1. it is one of the grandfathers of the MW genre and if you like FPS then you should have played it 2. Call yourself a good FPS player because you played the last CoD Games?! How about showing your skill with a real challenge?! 3. Shadow Ops was CoD 4 before CoD 4 even existed. PS: i see a lot of people complaining about the lack of a save function. Come on kids! Grow some balls and practise. The Levels are short and this game is never unfair. Dont blame the game for your lack of skill. Dear Gog! Rainbow Six Rogue Spear Project IGI (No save function and Missions that wont end. I wait for the tears about this one) MAKE IT HAPPEN!

An old-school FPS

Back in the day (2004) I actually missed Shadow Ops: Red Mercury. To my view, 2004 was the year of the first-person shooters (Painkiller, Far Cry, Doom 3, Half-Life 2) and quite logically it slipped my attention. 18 years later, I have to say that this is a nice little game. It does offer some old school vibe. The cutscenes are made with the engine of the game, which was actually the rule back then. The story is plain and simple and many times I had the feeling I am actually playing a 90s action movie - right from my childhood. The main protagonist is a stereotypical American soldier, there is also a femme fatale in the form of an Eastern European former girlfriend (presently scientist), and a conspiracy that is entrenched into the very heart of the US Intelligence and threatens the very existence of our world. Hardly novel, but surprisingly entertaining, if you have grown up in the 90s. The action is really fast paced, as there are TONS of enemies to shoot down. The rather linear and scripted gameplay can feel a bit boring after some time, since there is virtually one way to advance through the levels and that is the way that the programmers intended to. However, it didn't bother me that much. On the bright side, the locations are diverse, spanning from the Middle East, through the jungles of Africa and the culmination is on top of the Eiffel Tower. I have to admit, I liked it. There are some simple puzzles to be solved in the course of advancing through the levels. They are by no means challenging and able to tamper with your progress. Final verdict - If you are a fan of plain, simple and fast-paced FPS games, where you don't devote much of yourself to thinking, this is the perfect game for you. It relieves stress and can amuse you, if you give it a chance. However, do not attempt to find a Delta Force clone, since tactics and stealth are at the bare minimum here. I gave it a 5/5 because of nostalgia. The realistic score should be 4/5, or a solid 80/100.

OK game, great blast from the past

Some people judge a shooter game based on its shotgun. If youre one of those people, this game is not for you. By today's standards it doesnt have much weapon variety, it's AI is so bad, and its firefights are repetitive. It takes you to many of the cliche locals other shooters had done better by then. I would not reccomend this game for anyone who has never played it before. Those of us who enjoyed this game on the Origional Xbox, however, might enjoy the trip.

Pre Modern Warfare modern-military FPS

Shadow Ops is FPS game in style of mid 2000 hollywood action movies. Cheesy mix of Brosnan era James Bond and Tom Clancy's stories that takes itself too serious - globe trotting, stolen nukes, cheesy villain. If you enjoy spy/military fiction of that particular time you'll enjoy it. Gameplay wise it reminded me most of EA's 007 games (Agent under fire, Nightfire) but without gadgets. Overall fine fps with few minor issues (Health system and save system).
