PSA - Bullet Hell Incoming
TLDR; Combat in this game quickly changes from something similar to 2D Zelda or Secret of Mana into pure bullet hell. Boss fights are the worst offenders, but even regular enemies start covering the screen in attack spam by the halfway mark. If you aren't into bullet hell, maybe give this one a miss. This bums me out - I've been following the game for many years, and was really excited for the release. The presentation is amazing - the pixel art, the music, lots of little touches here and there. The story is interesting enough to pull you along, and the collecting aspects do their job well, giving you tons of "checklist" activities to complete. But the combat... Things start fine, reminding me of the 2D Zelda games, Secret of Mana, and the early Ys games. But if you stay on the same screen fighting the endlessly respawning enemies for too long, they begin to spawn faster and faster, until the screen is just a mess of bodies, projectiles, attack animations and loot. Keeping track of your character becomes a chore, and dodging all of those attacks is even worse. Later areas ramp things up much more quickly, to the point where I started trying to just run past enemies, worried that killing even one or two could start the chain reaction to bullet hell. One late game dungeon felt like each room was just a number of bullet hell waves, with the exit locked until you completed them all. And as noted before, the boss fights are almost all bullet hell affairs as well. Is it a good bullet hell? I don't know, as I don't play bullet hell games. I don't like them, and I'm not good at them. For people into that genre, this is probably not a big deal, as I expect this isn't even a very hard bullet hell game, but for someone like me, who was pulled in by the similarity in presentation to classic 2D ARPGs and the early game combat, this is very disappointing. I just finished the...second to last? dungeon, and am very close to just setting the game down without finishing.
