PSA - Bullet Hell Incoming

TLDR; Combat in this game quickly changes from something similar to 2D Zelda or Secret of Mana into pure bullet hell. Boss fights are the worst offenders, but even regular enemies start covering the screen in attack spam by the halfway mark. If you aren't into bullet hell, maybe give this one a miss. This bums me out - I've been following the game for many years, and was really excited for the release. The presentation is amazing - the pixel art, the music, lots of little touches here and there. The story is interesting enough to pull you along, and the collecting aspects do their job well, giving you tons of "checklist" activities to complete. But the combat... Things start fine, reminding me of the 2D Zelda games, Secret of Mana, and the early Ys games. But if you stay on the same screen fighting the endlessly respawning enemies for too long, they begin to spawn faster and faster, until the screen is just a mess of bodies, projectiles, attack animations and loot. Keeping track of your character becomes a chore, and dodging all of those attacks is even worse. Later areas ramp things up much more quickly, to the point where I started trying to just run past enemies, worried that killing even one or two could start the chain reaction to bullet hell. One late game dungeon felt like each room was just a number of bullet hell waves, with the exit locked until you completed them all. And as noted before, the boss fights are almost all bullet hell affairs as well. Is it a good bullet hell? I don't know, as I don't play bullet hell games. I don't like them, and I'm not good at them. For people into that genre, this is probably not a big deal, as I expect this isn't even a very hard bullet hell game, but for someone like me, who was pulled in by the similarity in presentation to classic 2D ARPGs and the early game combat, this is very disappointing. I just finished the...second to last? dungeon, and am very close to just setting the game down without finishing.

Great/beautiful game - Ótimo/belo jogo

I loved this game, it reminds me of Secret of Mana on the SNES, and several other games of the genre/era. Despite only having the official language as English, there are unofficial translations (made by community users) that are available on the official forum. Amei esse jogo, ele me lembra Secret of Mana do SNES, e vários outros jogos do gênero/época. Apesar de apenas ter o idioma oficial como inglês, há traduções não oficiais (feita por usuários da comunidade) que ficam disponíveis no fórum oficial (há uma tradução 100% PT-BR inclusive)

You cant take one but you can collect it

Grindea is the name and grinding is the game. Don't let you heart fill with dread. This isn't Darkest Dungeon. Grindea won't lie to you. Your character exists to solely to collect crap in a society that is centered around crap collecting. There is a story, it is quite pleasant, but it is only there to foster you to collect more and more crap. The Grindean system of grinding rewards is well layered. Obviously, you gain experience for the culmination of crap collecting chores you are coerced to complete. The various tid-bits, bobs, and nobs of crap you find go to crafting new and improved crap. You can feed your crap to your pet for stat boosts, and you can even get a crap-shack to fill with EVEN MORE CRAP! Plus there is an entire poke-dex dedicated to the beasts you have slaughtered, and if you have killed enough of them, you get a card (ie more crap) and a stat boost! I love it! This is a hoarders RPG dream. The Devs did a bang up job and nailed the polished 16 bit era ARPG look and mechanics. This game plays vitamix smooth. I have a great time unwinding with this game. My favourite part of this game is that you are not married your character build (I mean you could if you wanted). You are given an allotment of points, based on your level, which can be spent on a wide variety of skills and spells. You could start out as a melee based character and then swap out to to be a spell caster part way through the game. The skill/spell swaps cost gold, which is fairly abundant, so you can change your character as much as you can afford. It is the ultimate in customisation. There ain't nothing wrong with a little bump and Grind....ea 9.5/10 (92hrs on steam)

Don’t do this to yourself

I don’t recommend the game because of the difficulty spikes and story. The first part of the game is enjoyable, and I could have recommended the game solely based on that. However, there is a sudden difficulty spike when you reach a certain area in the Story Mode. Not just the difficulty, but the story changes too, and becomes quite grim and edgy, which I did not expect. There are some very important moments in the story, for which you want to find the resolution and answer, but unfortunately you have to go through a lot more bosses before moving forward with the story. The biggest offender for me is the last boss fight in the Story Mode. I've played the game on normal difficulty, and could not beat this boss in a reasonable amount of time, with reasonable effort. This gave me a lot of frustration, as I wanted to see how the story progresses, and didn't really care about fighting anymore. In the end, I had to lower the difficulty to beat this boss, and I don't really like that, but it's better to do so than waste time and energy. Especially because of the way how the game ends. The goddess Grindea is sadistic and the developers are sadistic. You have to beat the Arcade Mode for more story, and I don't like this decision. The revelation at the end of the Arcade Mode is not worth your struggle to beat it. I have to shorten my review, so I will omit spoilers. The story really left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I was quite offended that the developers thought that the player should go through such hell to be served such psychopathic material. When I understood what was happening, or, what had happened in that world, I felt disgusted. It felt like the devs pi**ed on me. Some good parts: first 50% of the game, storytelling through environment, artifacts and interactions between them. Unfortunately, it might be that they are just parasites, animated, but not living objects, as the player may think. If this is true, that makes me even more sad and disappointed.
