Sam is a six-foot canine detective with a love of justice. Max is a hyperkinetic rabbity-thing with a taste for mayhem. Together, they're the Freelance Police. And they're about to save the world.
Good to have you back, little buddy!
In 2006, the comic book crime-fighting duo Sam & Max starred in the first full-fledged episodic game from Telltale, the studio that went on to make The Walking Dead and Batman: The Enemy Within .
Now everyone's favorite dog and rabbity-thing are back in Sam & Max Save the World Remastered, a new version of their first season of episodic games that has been lovingly updated by a small group of the original developers with the blessing of Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell.
Return to the adventure game that was once called "gaming's first sitcom" and is today known as "the remaster you didn't know you were waiting for." With enhanced graphics, new widescreen and gamepad support, five new musical tracks, and the same brain-tickling puzzles and offbeat humor that won it IGN's Best Adventure GOTY award back in the day, Sam & Max Save the World Remastered is a modern classic that you'll love to play—or play again.
Now, let's go save the world...
It's just another day at the office for the self-proclaimed Freelance Police when the Commissioner calls in with a disturbing report: former child stars are running amok in the street! What starts as an open-and-shut case of idiotic vandalism balloons into an all-out conspiracy as Sam and Max encounter one miscreant after another who have been mysteriously hypnotized. (You can tell from the "spinny thing" they do with their eyes.)
Who's the source of this malfeasance, and what is their dastardly plan? Cracking this case will require Sam's nose for detective work, Max's lack of conscience, an assortment of inventory items, and a little help from neighbors Sybil Pandemik, Bosco, and Jimmy Two-Teeth. From Sam & Max's street to the White House lawn, inside the internet, and all the way to the moon, this baffling mystery gets weirder and funnier as it unfolds.
Skunkape Games clearly love the originals and care about bringing these games into the modern era. A fresh coat of paint on a classic. Hearing dialog that isn't compressed within an inch of its life is worth the price alone.
Cries of "censorship" are kind of disingenuous given that the original version with none of the changes is also included. If you don't happen to like Bosco's new voice (I happen to think it's good), just play the original version. And as for the couple of jokes (out of hundreds) that were cut... well, they weren't especially funny to begin with.
Really happy with how this looks and sounds. I've always loved the series and recommended the telltale games on account of their witty writing making up for charming but unimpressive graphics.
Now I just think it just looks great, the color splash and tweaking is putting some serious life in the game without stepping on the original vision. It feels like this was always what it was supposed to look like.
Now I understand a lot of people down here are outraged over the altered dialouge.
I understand that it seems largely unessecary, it's not like Sam & Max have ever been particularly edgy. As I understand it though, it doesn't look like a businessman walked into an office and told the devs to change anything. They just felt like it was better or safer to change some lines.
The way I see it, this is made by developers of the original games and they decided to play it more safe with the remaster, which I respect. Their names will be on this project and nowadays it's best to make sure you can stand by it. If they wanna make sure they don't step on toes, that's fine with me. It's not really noticeable, especially when the overall work here is really solid stuff,
The originals will be re-released soon as well for all the historians out there.
I'm just happy to see my boys again.
If you like Sam and Max being together and solving puzzles then this remaster is up your alley.
The graphics are much better and beautiful to look at and everything runs smoothly.
It's easy to get the impression that this game isn't all that good with all the negative reviews front and center and people rate bombing the positive ones (including this one no doubt). But rest assured, this game is just as good as it was all those years ago.
Sunkape really did this game justice as the updated visuals and controller support make the game look as if it was made recently and not around 15 years ago. And it even includes references to foreshadow later episodes and even the later two seasons! It really feels like the team cared about TellTale Sam & Max's legacy and it helps make the transition between each adventure feel a lot more seamless for new players.
The main talking/pain point people have is regarding the new voice actor for Bosco and some jokes that got changed or outright omitted, witch can be a major bummer for the more 'puritan' Sam & Max fan. But even with the removed/altered jokes in mind, the main experience and humor of the game has not been compromised whatsoever, and on average about two or three jokes have been changed or omitted per episode. And almost all except one are with Bosco thanks to the new actor (the odd one out involve the C.O.P.S.). Though I do agree that Skunkape should've let people know these jokes were cut before people found out themselves.
For what jokes they did remove though, they added some in as well. Quite a bit of cut content and side gags make their way back in, and even all new silent gags were included to spice up some of the less lively places and to cleverly work around the lack of new voice work.
If you're someone who doesn't care about 6 or 8 jokes (out of like 200) going missing and want a look at TellTale's olden days with a fresh coat of paint for modern systems, I cannot recommend this game enough. However, for those that really want those 8 jokes, you can buy this game on Steam and it will come with all the old versions of the episodes at no extra cost. Everyone wins!
Sam & Max Season 1, now known as Save the World, is a point and click classic. With some of the original team back from the ruins of Telltale, a new version is released to bring this gem onto modern systems.
Graphically, the game looks fantastic, with all sorts of lighting changes, and model edits to bring the characters more into how Steve Purcell envisions them, cleaning up some of the wonky details the older models picked up. If that was just what they did, it'd still be a very solid offering.
But they put the work in! No longer do you just appear in a building after driving to it, there are now exteriors modeled for these locations. QOL additions have been added, like hotspots for where you can click, to avoid the point and click pitfall of pixel hunting (not that Sam & Max was particularly bad with this, but every bit helps!), the ability to run, added in Season 2, new music from the original composer(!!!!) to help break up some of the more repetitive tracks and add more flavor.
And they went even deeper in with the details, my favorite being that the TVs in the studio now actually work! I could go on, but I think you should discover these changes on your own.
Now, the elephant in the room. There is a low rating for this game, and that's because of two reasons: Bosco's VA was replaced, and some lines were changed. Bosco's original VA wasn't African American, and so the devs re-cast him with a new actor who is. Personally, I don't think the new guy is as good, but he's definitely not bad. I may just be biased from having played these games so much when they came out, though. Secondly a few jokes were changed (and we're talking like, ten-ish lines in a game of over a thousand). It is not an entire re-write to "sanitize" the game, as some reviews say. If you really miss jokes making fun of special needs kids and stalking underage girls online, well, the original copies come with this too. For those of you with taste, though, it's not a big deal at all.
