Sam & Max Hit the Road

funny! I loved whacking Max on whak a rat at the carnival.

I had this on CDROM as a kid, it was enjoyable and often confusing in the way that old point+click adventure games were (and sometimes still are). This GOG version runs perfectly on Win11. I chose to edit the samnmax.ini file to disable fullscreen mode. The inclusion of the original manual AND the hint book as PDFs is a great touch, as there's some lovely silly stuff in them. F5 opens the ScummVM menu to save/load/quit.

This was funny back when I played it in my young teens, and its still funny now as a middle-aged adult. Slapstick humor? Check. Unnecessary violence? Check. Nonsensical puzzle solutions? Check. All of the ingredients for a properly zany LucasArts game.

Sam & Max Hit The Road is one of those classic games that pushes a genre forward. It's colourful, inventive, plays around with its genre and is a damn good fun game to boot. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I like click adventures for, oh, about 50% of the game before getting bored and moving on to something more action oriented. I've played through to the end of this game twice. If that doesn't sum it all up, I'm not sure what does. Hands down the best adventure game I've ever played.
