Description

« Que savez-vous sur Saint Kotar, étranger ? »

  • Une aventure d'horreur psychologique, un sinueux récit de foi, de folie et d'obscurs mystères ;
  • Une atmosphère ténébreuse et hors pair ;
  • Partez au plus profond de la Croatie et explorez la sinistre ville rurale de Sveti Kotar, pleine d'une riche histoire et d'anciennes traditions ;
  • Jusqu'à 20 heures de jeu, de multiples ramifications et plusieurs dénouements possibles ;
  • Deux personnages jouables, et deux réalités distinctes à vivre ;
  • Les décisions d'un personnage peuvent affecter l'histoire de l'autre ;
  • Un monde superbement sombre et peint à la main ;
  • Un doublage audio complet par une talentueuse sélection d'acteurs ;
  • Une bande originale lugubre et saisissante.

Fun and clever B-horror game

This one is a strange beast. It is a point and click adventure with religious and Catholic undertones, like "Gray Dawn" meeting "Fran Bow". Its puzzles range between easy and medium-difficulty, there's some small (and really small) pixel hunting, and discussions and scenes about God and the devil that range between the hilariously clever and the embarrassingly fun. Both landscapes and atmosphere are top notch. You really see that they loved creating this world. As is usually the case, though, characters' movement, both facial and bodily, leaves to be desired. The game itself still needs some work too: random blackouts occur, the devs made some strange gameplay decisions (the Prologue may be the worst offender) and the voice acting is not always as good as it should. Sometimes you feel, as a player, that there's more lore than actual gameplay. Despite all these little flaws (that can be solved in future updates) "Saint Kotar" is a fun point-and-click adventure that doesn't scare you as much as lure you into a creepy story about godly faith and Satan worship. I think that some characters, some witty dialogues, the dreary atmosphere and the sets are worth the entry fee. Travelers willing to visit the little town of Saint Kotar will find much to like in this funny and peculiar B-horror tale.

A solid interactive story

Adventure games are supposed to have puzzles, whereas in this game they are basically non-existent. The last puzzle is an exception and a real face-slapper, since most actions before that are trivial. The crowdfunding demo showed a lot of promise. I'm sad to say that mostly, I feel, it was underdelivered. In comparison, the demo featured a lot more objects to investigate and interact with, far more mysterious and eerie prologue and at least three or four different paths which you could take to complete it. I was also looking forward to some answers for the mystery behind Silent Hill-ish radio from the souvenir shop. Nothing about it in the final game, though. Keeping in mind that this is a low budget project and a very first from the Red Martyr, it does end up being a pretty solid product overall. The lack of puzzles is compensated by some rather outstanding writing and dialogues. Be prepared for a lot of reading, and a lot of walking. Double-clicking makes the character run so this speeds up travel a bit, and in some cases there's also a handy dialog option to get to a certain destination immediately. For better orientation there is also a non-interactive map of town with surroundings, and a 'task list' with active/completed sections. The art is compelling and fits the setting nicely. All of the text is enriched with voice acting, which generally does not disappoint, especially in the case of playable characters. You can tell when the actors put their souls into the role. The music isn't very varied, but there were a couple tunes that got stuck in my head long after I was done playing. This is all a credit to the overall atmosphere and mood. Lastly, a tip - keep at least one save game from previous area as a backup. I made a mistake not to and got stuck almost at end. D: As a backer I really, really wanted to give this a better score, but the things that irked me were just too prominent. Great potential this team has, and I'm looking forward to more from them.

Good narrative driven adventure

After finishing the game and clocking 10 hours (with things left to explore/find/figure out) i can say that i really enjoyed my time in Saint Kotar. As the title of this review implies this is a narrative driven experience where puzzles are included but don't stand out - at least not for me. But that didn't bother me because i liked the "flow" i got while going throught the story. The premise is captivating and eerie with awesomely made backgrounds and interesting characters to meet and talk to. I also like the light background music. All of the above really helped the game create it's own ominous atmosphere. There are number of choices to be made thoughout which gives the game some replay value esp. for those who are going after achievements and don't mind going through the same conversations and situations. Not everything is perfect though - the voice acting ranges from good to bad, animations can be stiff but not horrible, some strange dialog choices also occur. I also missed some cutscenes/animations when i got only a black screen and some sounds that implied what happened at the time. As someone already noted the above issues can be fixed or polished and the developers really care and work on this game. Much love was given and I would recommend this title to everyone who loves a good adventure story with great atmosphere and some light puzzles!

Follow the path of Saint Kotar...

I was a Kickstarter backer for this game and was hoping it would turn out to be just like some of my other favorite horror adventures like Black Mirror or Dark Fall. Well despite some flaws it mostly did! The best thing about Saint Kotar is the setting, story and atmosphere. After a slow start I got drawn in more and more while exploring the town and its surroundings. There are many secrets to discover and side quests to complete, and the backstory is fleshed out the more you explore. So the more you get immersed in the game the more you get out of it! There are several loose ends and locked doors that could be expanded on, and I can't wait for the devs to release some DLC. They are also committed to fixing any bugs. There are two characters you can control, and one bug that I find more hilarious than anything is that the AI for the other character just does whatever it wants. He'll walk around aimlessly, walk in place and you can even push him around! I was also a beta tester so have come to see how this game has developed, and I can say it just gets better and better! It's much more story than puzzle driven, so if you're looking for an immersive and atmospheric game with an intriguing story then dim the lights, light a candle and venture into the fog enshrouded world of Saint Kotar...

Not as good as I wanted it to be

Saint Kotar basically feels like a Black Mirror game just in a different setting. Unfortunately I could not make myself sympathize with the protagonists at all. Every time I would start to warm up to the main protagonist Benedek (you play mostly as him) his overall whiny nature would ruin it again sooner or later...and don't get me started on his insufferable counterpart Nikolay. However, the gloomy atmosphere is great and the story is suspenseful enough to make me ignore those gripes. Only in the last quarter of the game, the story gets a little too outlandish for me and ends in a really disappointing way. I am aware that their budget was limited but sadly that also impacted my overall experience with the game: (too) many cutscenes just result in the screen fading to black. Some animations feel a bit stiff and sometimes your characters literally just float over the ground and involuntary push each other across the screen. In bigger areas the slow pace of the characters often tested my patience because even making them run didn't really make them much faster. Here I would've preferred the option to just double-click my way into the next screen. You do get a map but sadly you can't interact/fast-travel with it, so it's honestly not much of use. What also annoyed me a little was that you can't visit some areas whenever you wanted. I don't mind having off-limits locations at the end of a game but the fact that you can't properly explore a town and its surroundings while you are basically searching for a missing person makes little sense to me. Which brings me to another point: You can actually miss a bunch of objects or locations due to the fact that some areas are only available to visit once, so saving often is advised. Still, the sound design is excellent and the locations are (mostly) hauntingly beautiful, especially the locations around town. All in all, it's a solid first game for the studio and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do next.
